what colour countertop for kitchen with oak floors

Can't decide, help me! We have engineered oak floors and white kitchen cabinets in kitchen, part of kitchen diner. Table is white with oak top, ditto chairs. Don't want real wood countertop as two young kids and DH very messy in kitchen, would kill it. Fake wood looks lame, granite too expensive, every thing else looks kind of cheesy. But kitchen is ready to go in and I still can't decide. Any ideas???? It must be easy to maintain and not show dirt. I'm leaning toward fake wood out of desperation......

We've had a 'Getacore' worktop in this colour in our kitchen for the past ten years. The kitchen is solid oak (sort of a 'medium' colour IYKWIM) for both doors and flooring and this breaks up the woodiness. Definitely doesn't show up stains and still looks brand new.

We have engineered oak floors, pale grey cupboards and slate worktops. Cheaper than granite and absolutely lovely.

I have been toying with doing the worktop using the same solid or engineered wood as on the floor. It is fairly hardwearing, you will have the usual need to avoid water marks and chopping. If need be it can be sanded and refinished. It would normally need a ply sheet underlayer.

I have engineered oak floors and I have black quartz worktop with mirrored flecks in it (star galaxy) but I was half torn between that & the white and the grey versions. DH had to make the decision in the end and black looked the best colour to co-ordinate the white gloss main run of units and the red kitchen island. Unfortunately, quartz is as expensive if not more so than granite especially the mirrored fleck versions. I think that there are quality laminates out there - you need to get out there and do some research quickly! Nothing beats 'seeing' & 'touching' - I wouldn't rely on internet shoppping in this instance.

i like the idea of marble. but i believe it can stain.

Thanks for all the ideas, dragged DH to the shop and had another look with all these suggestions, now think we are going for slate. now of course I have to think of the wall tiles......!

I have smoke grey glass metro tiles.

We have oak cabinets, black floor and counter tops, white tiles, cream walls and lots of colourful bits and pieces!
