Can we move / remove our brick chimney and replace it with a flue thingy?

We are looking at dreaming about options for converting more loft space, but the top half of the chimney is in the way for one of the possible access points for new stairs. Do we forget this location? Or is it possible to move or remove the top part of the chimney? It's brick and large. DH seems to think this can be done.

It's a conventional 1920s fireplace, with a living flame gas fire. We would keep the chimney breast as is on the ground floor, but would want to remove the upper part and replace this with a flue thingy (??) directed a bit to the side and out the roof.

Is this even possible?

I think so, I'm planning the same kind of thing, but I haven't actually had advice on it yet, so don't quote me!

Let's hope a clever architect comes along soon and answers the question for both of us! :)

That would be good!

Bumpity bump...

Yes, in theory. Are you intending to remove the chimney stack too?

If not you will have to support it.

No, we actually want to keep a proper functioning fireplace on the ground floor, remove the great bulk of brick chimney above it, but still have the smoke etc go out through the roof by some other means. Too much to ask?

Yes, you can re-direct the flue through an external wall. If you don't want to use the chimney in the attic any more it can be removed but just make sure it's done by someone who knows what they're doing rather than a bloke with a big hammer (you'd be amazed...)

Thank you - that's really helpful.
