Will a carpet fitter fit a second hand carpet?

We've recently moved. We've taken up the carpet in our front room and want to use it in one of the bedrooms upstairs. Although at first glance it looked fine, but taking it up made us realise how dusty it is. I was intending to get professional cleaners to do the whole upstairs once the carpet is laid. Will a carpet fitter be offended if I ask them to lay a second hand carpet? Would they be ok reusing underlay do you think?

Sorry if this is a silly question. I've never had carpet before.

If you find a good fitter they'll lay it for you second hand or not. I would buy new underlay (the best you can afford-try and find a trade outlet) as it makes a massive difference to how the carpet feels underfoot.

Thanks both. I'll look into getting new underlay.

I second the new underlay. We put new underlay under a carpet in a tiny room and shoved the old carpet back on top and it made a huge difference.

Rally Cashmere? That's good to know. I was a bit unsure about re-using the carpet but we've got so much to do that we can't really run to new carpet at the moment. I'm guessing that new underlay shouldn't be too expensive for a medium sized bedroom.

Yes, we found that the carpet was looking dirty because the old underlay was disintegrating underneath. Once we binned that we gave the carpet a good clean and it came up like new.

Brilliant. Out of interest, did you clean it yourselves or get someone in to do it?

We cleaned it ourselves with a machine but it was a small carpet. We would like to do the same with a larger one but we would need to get someone in for that as it is filthy and I don't think the domestic machines are up to the job.

Yes, I think I've read on here that someone with a van-mounted carpet cleaner is the way to go. I think we'll probably do that when the time comes.
