Dull question about radiators

Our downstairs used to have 5 radiators.
Now annoyingly we only have 3 (because of putting in some extra kitchen cabinets and getting a piano).

Unsurprisingly our downstairs is now bloody freezing :)

So the question is... do we have to find a way of rerranging things so that we can fit in an extra radiator (or two) or could we make a big enough difference by putting in bigger/better/more efficient radiators.

You can work out how much space your radiators can heat using a calculation, I think it's available on the wickes website. I had a double radiator put in when we had some work done and it's definitely more efficient than the single ones we have everywhere else, so that could be an option?

is it open plan, or do you leave the internal doors open? if so the warm air will rush upstairs.

You can get double radiators of the same length that give about 50% more heat and can be fitted with some, but not much, replumbing.

otherwise you might consider long low radiators and spreading them round a bit to give more even heat.

To get a neat job, the floors will need to come up, otherwise you will have visible pipe runs.

In the kitchen you can have under-unit heaters with a sort of radiator and a flan to blow warm air at your feet.

Whenever making changes to the CH, take the opportunity to have at least a chemical clean first to remove old sludge and sediment.

Thank you both. That is really helpful.
We are pretty open plan and that it definitely part of the problem.

I assume that thermostatic valves throughout would also help so that we can simply have the heating on for longer without overheating upstairs.
