What colour is your living room?

I need some inspiration. It's a 30s house with highish ceilings and a picture rail and coving. It's currently the colour of paint (patches of pink) that was under the vile wallpaper we peeled off about a year as we thought we would be decorating earlier and the wallpaper was that bad it had to go straight away. The room needed work before it was in a re-decorating state. It now is.

I'd like to go bolder than neutrals. What colour is yours?

We are about to paint our living room f&b oval room blue. I can report back if you like!

Tweedledeedum · 21/01/2013 22:48

Little Greene Joanna which is very neutral, a very light taupe. I wanted to do French Grey but DH not keen. Loving our bathroom colour though and wish our living room was that colour now - Fired Earth Ecru. It's very calming, much darker taupe.

It would appear from this thread that the current trend is blues and greys, moving on from beiges and strings, yes?

Just me and Spoonyfucker out of step then! Grin And happy to be so - I find blues and greys too chilly for me. :) (although me more than Spoonyfucker - my kitchen is duckling yellow with white units and the same pine floor)

mine had been blue, cream and wood for 12 years... thought about changing but love it too much. we come back in fashion every few years but everything is modern-ish classic iyswim - no plans to change.Smile

Living room is fired earth 'duck egg', I really like it, and drawing room is crown 'aspen silver', also nice.

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 21/01/2013 23:30

Spoonyfucker lives in a very sunny place so the duck egg blue is a nice contrast.

Grey blue mainly, with the chimney breast more of a bright dark blue (worryingly described by a friend as 'Facebook blue' as it is exactly the colour of the fb menu bar)

Curtains are same dark blue, as is the sofa, but sofda will be replaced soon with a charcoal coloured one. Our floor is cheap orange wood effect laminate though, and we can't be bothered changing it whilst we have v young children, so the walls had to not clash with it.

oooh - I like the oval room blue, even though it wasn't the sort of blue I had in mind. It might be a bit too grey for us. This is so difficult. It took me 9 tester pots before choosing our bedroom colour. I've come to realise that paints rarely look the same colour on the wall as on my computer monitor, the paint chart or even the little block of wood they paint and put up in the shops.

Scarlettsmummy2, I used a mauvey grey for our dining room that looks similar to Aspen silver. I love it. It's like a warm grey.

Perfect Taupe, which is a sort of lilac grey. I''ve got lots dark grey, black and silver with it, but it's a bit bland for rooms that are very light.

Btw Fired Earth paint has excellent coverage- I used one 2.5l tin to paint my entire (fairly large) lounge. It worked out cheaper than any other paint for me because of this- took twice the amount of F&B, Dulux and Crown to cover same amount! It also goes on smoothly and doesn't mark as easily as F&B particularly...

fussychica · 22/01/2013 13:21

Not F&B Shock but Dulux Muddy Puddle /Nutmeg White. I HATE choosing paint so have used alot of Nutmeg White around the houseGrin

Reporting back: we painted the living room Oval Room Blue and its amazing, we love it!

Was a huge step for me as I generally just go with shades if grey...although I did recently experiment with greige!

We have a north west facing living room, so quite a cold light. During the day it is quite a dirty, sludgy blue but not in anyway overbearing or light sapping. In the evening with curtains drawn and lamps on it is darker and very cosy.

When I first considered this colour I thought it had a green hue from the sample I did. But I think that was because the other colour I was considering was Stone Blue and next to each other Oval room blue looked greeny. But on its own its fine.

SaladIsMyFriend · 15/02/2013 11:31

Living room is sludgy yellow but am repainting later in the year.

fussychica I have been testing neutrals for our hall and one of them is Nutmeg White, I really like it. It looks more grey than some of the others to me, is this right? Does it look grey in your house or is it just on the paper I painted my sample onto?

ivykaty44 · 15/02/2013 11:34

mustary mellow yellow, lovely and warm colour - like walking home and seeing the light on in winter as dd2 uses the front sitting room quite a lot and it looks warm and inviting.

The back sitting room is white coffee
