Can anyone suggest an area on the Stockport/Peak District border? I'm moving there and don't know it very well. Thank you!

We have just left a town called Bollington, its about 6 miles S of Stockport, and right at the edge of the Peaks, train line into MCR from Macclesfield - fabulous town, was heartbroken to leave, excellent for families. Let me know if you want any further info. Alot depends on where you will be working ,school requirements etc, - property very reasonable there

We've bought (and are slowly renovating) a house in Gatley and I love the place - excellent primary school, community atmosphere, independent coffee shop/deli etc. it's also on the trainline between the centre and airport so very well connected. It's a bit further in towards Manchester than you're looking at I think though.

As guinea says, it's going to depend where you need to travel to for work etc.

I would say avoid Glossop as the traffic is a nightmare. Tell us where you need to travel to and we can recommend some places.

Yes, it will depend on whether you need to get into MCR or somewhere in the Peaks, as Buxton is also wonderful ( Has direct trainline to Manc Picc) and would be a great place to live. Other nice towns in the area include Leek ( but quite far south of Stockport and Macclesfield is also lovely.

Depends on:

  • where you need to travel to
  • how you need/want to travel (train/car)
  • how built up vs green you want
  • whether you want a local secondary

E.g.:

  • Bollington: green, short drive to mainline (London/Manc) trainline, nearest secondary Macc (not as well regarded as Poynton's), lots of pubs, bigger - leisure centre etc. I know this sounds odd, but has a reputation for friendliness!
  • Disley: green, trainline (Buxton/Manchester), painful drive in on A6, secondary in Poynton, smaller/cuter - but cut through by A road carrying lots of lorries, Lyme Park
  • Poynton: green-ish, trainline (Macclesfield/Manchester), bad roads (busy), local secondary, bigger - leisure centre etc, waitrose, great garden centre/trainride/pottery place for young kids
  • Marple Bridge: green, trainline into Manc, secondary in Marple (not as well regarded as Poynton's), smaller/cuter

All of those are relatively expensive - you pay a bit for having somewhere a reasonable commute into Manc whilst on the borders of the Peaks. Bollington and Poynton are bigger (leisure centres etc), Marple Bridge and Disley are smaller/cuter. Bollington is more characterful on the Kerridge side.

There's also Whaley Bridge, New Mills, Chapel en le Frith, Chinley etc (people will have differing views on them all).

Definitely depends where you need to get to. I like Disley but the a6 is horrendous, although it is sought after.

Hayfield, Chinley, Chapel, New Mills & Whaley Bridge ...... all good. Depends where you are commuting to.
What is it you want as they are all have their own characters.
Marple, Bollington Macc are all very Cheshireish.
