Anyone know if this is a reasonable plumbing quote?

Hi, DH and I are home improvement newbies and thus clueless.

We are getting our bathroom done as it is currently a showerroom. Need a bath for the kids. Keeping the exisiting shower and adding a bath seperately which means we need a new smaller sink too as the old one won't fit.

Anyway plumber has quoted £850 for his bit of the job. this includes stripping out existing stuff (shared with plasterer so will be some additional costs from him for removing tiles etc), reinstalling shower, installing bath, installing sink, moving towel rain and installing (he's also gas certfied) and he's also going to change our kitchen tap.

Wondered if anyone could say whether they thought that was a reasonable quote. He came recommended from a friend so I wouldnt expect him to overcharge but who knows!

That seems on the upper end of reasonable to me. But I would get another two quotes to put your mind at rest.

That sounds perfectly reasonable, although why you would pay a plasterer to remove tiles? That sounds like a very expensive way of doing the job.

Is the bathroom fitter not able to plaster and fit tiles, you could end up with a simple job taking for ever trying to fit trades around each other.

Thanks both,

Darkside - the plasterer and plumber know each other and they'll come in together to strip everything out. They said they are flexible and so can arrange to come in easily enough. They'll need to fit in with tiler though but said they can do this.

Why should plasterer not remove tiles? As previously mentioned - clueless! Should we do this ourselves? Saying that we have no tools....

Does the quote include the parts (bath/towel rail/tap etc)? If so then I'd consider this extremely reasonable!

If not then, as Conflugenglugen says and without seeing the job, I reckon that it's reasonable but on the high side.

Saying that, there's a lot to be said about trusting your plumber. If he's good then he's definitely worth it.

Pricing is also dependant on your location, if you're based in London then you'd be lucky to find a plumber with a day rate less than that!

I would be happy for the plasterer to remove tiles as he will be the one repairing his damage afterwards! Only if you were on the tightest budget would I consider doing it yourself..

Hope that helps! Dennis

Cherry

Yes, I would also think about the cost of the various parts and whether the plumber/ plasterer will be charging you VAT .

Cherrybug I only asked as a plasterers hourly rate would normally be a lot higher than that of say a plumber or tiler.
