Please help me choose kitchen floor

Kitchen will be Ikea cream high gloss, with oak effect laminate worktop.

Should I go for laminate flooring or tiles? If tiles then what colour/effect?

And while you're here can you help choose my tiles too? Do I go for cream metro? Or colour? Thinking glass splashback if we can afford it.

Am buying a rangemaster, probably back (unless someone tells me otherwise lol), other appliances are sadly a mishmash of white and silver.
It's taken us 5 months to decide on our kitchen, can't cope!!!

TIA

I have a 'thing' about matching floors and worktops Blush so we're having laminate floor and wood worktop. My alternative was slatey tiles and dark granitey worktop. But thats just my odd little hangup!

Would you put underfloor heating if you had tiles? cos our current horrid kitchen tiles are very cold to stand on in a morning while waiting for the kettle to boil!

Do you like the wood effect tiles?
Do Ikea do the upstands along the back of the worktops? Could you just have painted walls instead of tiles?

tootiredtothink · 08/01/2013 19:21

Thanks Yorky, I can't decide what my 'thing' is so I'll take yours Grin.

No underfloor heating, hadn't thought of tiles being cold, laminate it is!

Don't think ikea do the upstands, do love that look though. Wonder if other worktops will fit ikea kitchens?

Ha! I have a thing about worktops and floors not being too matchy - I'd go with slate floor tiles (or their laminate effect if you want warmer). I'd also not go with cream tiles and with a cream kitchen as I would think it would be hard to match the creams and then it is all very matchy anyway. I'd do something contrasting - maybe a sage green? Just goes to show how personal it all is!

tootiredtothink · 08/01/2013 20:52

Like the idea of different colour tiles. I'm not a green person though unless it's lime green and I'd imagine I'd get tired of that pretty quickly. Is a light blue a kitchen colour?

I do like pastel colours but do they go with high gloss kitchen? Feel I should be going contemporary?

Am probably over thinking everything but this is the first time I've had the terror joy of choosing a new kitchen Grin.

We got slate tile effect laminate. It's SHIT and it cost £45 per meter. We got coloured metro tiles from Walls and Floors. You can get samples sent before and they've got loads of colours. We got a glass splash back made to match the tiles at a local window maker. It's 90x75 cm and only cost £85! And we got a black and silver rangemaster.

tootiredtothink · 08/01/2013 21:05

Does the black Rangemaster look as good as I hope it will? I imagine it'll be the focal point? We're going for 110, am also worried about getting a good 'wow' extractor hood. Recommendations welcome on that too!

The only tile place I've been in is topps tiles, will go off to google walls and floors.

What don't you like about tile effect laminate AtAmber?

It scratches really easily, even though its supposed to be ok for kitchens we were told by the fitter not to get it wet! It's got a greyish swirly ness to it so it never looks clean. I got it because I thought tiles would be too cold but I wish we'd got tiles. The tiles from walls and floors are really nice and much cheaper than topps, I think they worked out at about £13 per sq m. We got a dark bluey turquoise. I love my rangemaster, it's the Kitchener 90, we have a rangemaster hood as well. I can't link to anything as I'm on my phone in a hotel room.

Can you integrate your appliances? The thought of their mismatch ruining your lovely new kitchen is upsetting me.

My one piece of advice is never ever let your husband talk you into white marble tiles. 5 years on every time you are on your hands and knees cleaning it ( which is often) you will literally want to smash his head in.

tootiredtothink · 08/01/2013 22:53

Now everytime I wash my floors I'll have that image in my head Wink.

The mismatch appliances make me twitch too, sadly all are relatively new so can't replace, will hope to integrate as they break down...yes, I'm not expecting a new kitchen ever again! We are getting an integrated dishwasher which I'm very excited about .

Back to normal laminate it is, although am wondering how much it'll cost for underfloor heating......

We got our underfloor heating (for tiles and laminate although the laminate isn't as cold to walk on anyway) from here good prices and quick delivery, and SO nice to walk on :)

Gumps · 09/01/2013 12:03

It is nice underfloor heating but now ours has broken so I'm looking at a grand for a specialist to lift up the tiles to fix it. I wonder if I could pay him to smash the tiles then I could replace them?
Off to ponder evil plan...

Mandy21 · 09/01/2013 13:44

Nothing really new to add other than to second what has already been said - we have cream tiles in the kitchen (such a bad idea, it never looks clean) and at the moment, when its cold and the heating hasn't been on before we get it, its almost painful to stand on in bare feet because its so cold. Just freezing. never, never again.

We have used Walls and Floors for wall tiles and they've been brilliant, lots of choice and very reasonable.

Fiveisenough · 09/01/2013 13:55

Have a look at amtico flooring. I have had tiles and found them cold and hard and laminate damages easily especially if like mine your washing machine leaks all over it.

Amtico is fantastic. It's warm like laminate and can be washed with water and beach to no ill effects. Mine has been down for 8 years and still looks like new and comes in loads of colours and finishes.

Fizzylemonade · 09/01/2013 16:52

Ikea's own standard worktop is 620mm deep so if you use a different worktop than Ikea's then you will need a deeper one.

I am having an Ikea kitchen and we are having Axiom worktops at 665 deep, they also do upstands to match the worktop.

We are having white gloss units, dark grey work top and Amtico flooring, warm underfoot and takes a beating.

tootiredtothink · 09/01/2013 20:28

Thanks for your replies. Have never heard of Amtico flooring but very excited to have found a supplier a few roads up from me.

Have also put few tile samples from walls and floors in shopping basket, but not very adventurous on my colours as yet. Any suggestions gratefully received. Certainly cheaper than tops tiles.

Can you do a search on houzz.com for cream gloss kitchen and have a look at what colours others have chosen? Might give you some ideas about what looks good to you.
