Gloss, satinwood or eggshell?

On the woodwork in our hall, bathroom and kitchen (skirtings and doors)?

We're getting our flat redecorated, as I type, in order to sell due to arrival of dc2 in a few months. Now, this is a 1 bed and likely to be bought by a landlord or postgrad student (close to Uni) or NHS staff (close to hospitals) and whoever buys it will still have to do some work (or will probably want to) so we're not talking Farrow & Ball or Interiors magazine - just clean and fresh.

I've always used white gloss in the past, by default, but I know that eggshell is now more popular.

HOWEVER ds and dh both have the grubbiest hands known to man and there will be fingerprints and greasy marks within the day, plus we have a cat who has been known to scratch at the bedroom door to let us know it's breakfast time - the 100 coats of old gloss laugh in the face of this treatment and don't show a mark.

So, I'm thinking that it's a no-brainer really to go for whatever is most hardwearing and easy to clean, even though we're not likely to be there in 6 months time. Is that gloss? Or will people truly throw up their hands in horror at white gloss naffness?

Go with gloss or whatever is cheapest especially since you are selling - most people will redecorate anyway so don't fret too much about whether it will put off buyers.

I had a house done in Eggshell and was quite disappointed.

To me it looks like undercoat, and does hold dirt. I'd go for satinwood if you think people will be snooty about gloss. It is certainly ideal for radiators.

Thanks - we're going with gloss.
