How much do new windows cost?

Looks like we may need 5 new windows and a glass door to the garden replaced. Three of the windows are probably standard size, the fourth is medium and the final one is large.

I have no idea how much these things cost and no idea how to decide between UPVC and all the rest (though cost will be the deciding factor, if the windows look OK enough).

Can anyone give me a very rough estimate of the costs of 5 windows plus glass door to garden - or at least a range of potential cost? Are we talking hundreds? Thousands?

It's going to vary widely, and will depend on your location, how big is 'big', do you want fancy finishes etc. As a very rough guide, if you are not in London/SE I would guess about £800 - £1200 from a local installer (not a large DG company) for ordinary upvc.

I'm waiting to hear back from a local small building firm but am really wanting to get some idea before then, so I don't get too much of a shock.

Is it's the figures you quote for all five in total, then that's just about manageable. If this is per window, then we might just need to think again (put cardboard over the windows!)

We have had some done, gone for wood coloured PVC on the outside, and A-rated glass. Costs ranged from £250 - £350 a window dependent on size. We are SE.

Tbh it all depends who you go to. If you find a small local company then it will be cheaper. I have a double glazing business and we have one every job we have quoted, My DH doesn't go in for making a huge profit as he would rather be working than not and we have low overheads as we work from home. Get atleast 3 or 4 quotes before you decide, make sure they are Fensa registered and come with an insurance backed guarantee.

Just an example, DH has recently fitted a whole house for £3000 and that included French doors.

We've just had 3 windows installed (2 bedroom and 1 bathroom) so not a big job. Cost £1600 but we had sash style so probably more £ than a basic style

My rough guide was for all 5, depending on size and where you are. Like moomoo says, we had the whole house done fairly recently, 2 doors & patio windows and all windows for £2500 but we are not in the south, and it was done by a local fitter. Took 2 days.

My advice would be to get a number of quotes. Look for plenty of glass and less frame as some companies will offer some really low prices but the windows are less glass and more frame. Don't go for ones with interior or exterior sills unless you need them. Also make sure the windows are made to measure rather than being off the shelf standard sizes that are then padded out with extra material to fit the gap.

Also check that you are getting quality glass, Triple glazed with soundproofing is amazing stuff and hardly lets out any heat.

Obviously ones with lots of opening will cost more than those that have none or less.

Our windows were installed just before we bought our house. They were bloody awful quality and a mix of windows, provided by a reputable nationwide company who wouldn't help us even though they were only fitted 6 weeks before we exchanged contracts. 5 large windows with half light and quarter light, 2 medium windows with quarter lights, a small window and a glazed front door was £1200 10 years ago.

Ensure your fitters have made a good job of the installation.

Ours need replacing soon, though the UPVC is sound, the glass and locks aren't, plus some windows are too small for the aperture and have additional sills where they are not needed. It's one of those dreams... one day :)

Definitely get a number of different quotes in before deciding. We got 6 windows plus front and back door replaced last year for £4k (in Southeast).

Just had a 3 bed end of terrace rental property done (so no extra fancy bits!), front door and back French doors were £800 each and 3 bed, bathroom, kitchen, lounge windows £2000. Had 3 quotes, all much the same, in Hampshire. Make sure you have a guarantee from FENSA.

I've just had quotes for a similar job 3-4K for a basic white pvc.

Who did you use to get your windows replaced? I live in Hampshire and just got a quote from Anglian and for 6 windows (3 of which make up a bay) they quoted my nearly £4000 which from looking at other peoples comments seems extremely high. Thank you.
