Doing up ex-council/uninspiring architecture: any inspiration?

Hiya, I am trying to tap the collective wisdom.

In the process of buying in London and we will get a lot more space for our money if we go for ex-council. I've seen lovely things done with them and having grown up in very mixed areas of London don't have any prejudices about council estates, but I've always lived in period property so am trying to broaden my imagination for what you can do with architecture that's often a bit boxy (the one we are currently hmming about is 1980s).

What I'm after is any blogs/interior design sites/photostories as well as advice/wisdom.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you know about pinterest and houzz.com?? If not, I'd go there. There are lots of pics of regular houses as well as really nice ones. Smaller american houses are often quite boxy without much architectural interest and people do lovely things with them.

I'm on pinterest but will check out Houzz.com - thanks!
My issue is that most of the lovely interior design shoots are done in places where you've got some nice bones to work on - it's much rarer to find places where someone's done something brilliant with small/boxy spaces, although I take your point about American houses. I'm a bit over looking at pics of places with huge light rooms and massive windows that have no relation to my reality! Is there a way of filtering?

Maybe try searching houzz.com for small living room, small kitchen, etc. The american ones will still be big or normal size in comparison to UK homes! You can also add the 'bones' yourself - some crown moulding at the tops of the rooms, woodburner instead of fireplace, etc. I've seen on pinterest people who add battening to their walls to look like wainscoting - which looks nice in the pictures. I think I've seen pins about 'how to add character to your home' - a search for that term on pinterest may yield something interesting? Built in bookcases are always nice - maybe around a doorway? I'm sure I've seen someone do it with some billy bookcases from ikea and then just added baseboards and mouldings to the top to make it look custom.
