Front door colour help

MadAboutHotChoc · 04/01/2013 09:36

I am determined to paint our front door - the problem is that the door, windows and other surrounding woodwork has been stained a dark mahogany stain. Bricks are a beige colour. Roof tiles are brown.

Can't afford to do the windows yet but can do the front door.

I love those flat Farrow and Ball sludgey colours that are popular in the Cotswolds and I am happy to consider other darker greys as well.

Any suggestions/recommendations for a suitable colour please?

If it faces the sun, avoid black or very dark coluurs. They get hot in direct sunlight, and on a wooden door this makes the paint surface age faster.

You may need to strip or sand off the old stain to get the new paint primer to stick to the bare prepared wood. Once you have painted it, it will be extremely difficult to stain it again.

Its east facing so any colour should be ok - I hate the stained look anyway so not worried about being able to stain it again.

Do need colour suggestions though....

I have a pinterest board of cool front doors if you're looking for inspiration? Probably not the lovely sludgy F&B colours you're looking for though :)

Oooh, I love your pinterest board, ecuse. I'm always recommending egg yolk yellow as a great front door colour but am rarely listened to, glad to see a couple of examples that you've found.

I am obsessed with yellow at the moment. I also have a 'black and white and yellow' board!

In my dream kitchen I would have white cabinets and yellow splashbacks but probably a shade or two more acidic than the one on your board Wink. Lovely pictures.

The sludgy green you're after might be Farrow and Ball French Grey - it's a nice grey-green.
