Are slate tiles in a bathroom a bit batchelor/dated???

Our bathroom is being done mid-feb so I'm just at the buying everything stage for it. It's a good size room and we have a freestanding bath, large frameless type shower, ceiling mounted shower head etc. We're having thesemetro tiles with white grout and I've always planned to do v dark grey walls (the look i'm aiming for is Abigail Ahern style, rather than goth or masculine).

I've been really stuck on floor tiles, initially planning white tiles but not liking the samples that we had through. We've now ordered these long thin slate tiles in a 60cm x 10cm size, so basically long thin rectangles.

However I'm not 100% convinced about them and worry the whole thing is going to look batcherlor pad, or 80s? (I'm not worried about the room looking cold or anything like that as I'll be putting a huge mirror and general "stuff" in there). I'm also a bit concerned that the dark grey floor/dark grey walls combo are going to add to this feel.

Could I have your opinions on this please? I don't to make a v expensive mistake as I won't be allowed to change it once it's done and if I don't like it, I will OBSESS over it Grin.

Also, what do people think of hex mosaic tiles like in this beautiful bathroom?

I like a small shallow shelf for loo rolls. And CP hart has lovely holders in so many styles I can usually match one

We didn't go for these in the end, but I saw some lovely and unusual hand made tiles on a local market. [[http://allgoneceramics.com/artwork/2082221_Tiles.html Here]

I don't see why you shouldn't have a samey or cliched bathroom, though - reject the tyrrany of individualism and embrace the common spirit of the age!

ponchopink · 29/12/2012 18:19

Ahh bless you Grendelsmum! Every time I (stupidly) post a post I either upset someone or end up feeling wrongfooted! So easy to offend, posts ,not just mine seem dissected for evidence of political incorrectness or signs of bad taste! Still love mumsnet though ! and I do think I have bad taste as i end up liking things that were once hot now not!

noddyholder · 29/12/2012 18:23

I am not averse to samey but ahern is naff and tacky! Slate white wood elegant and lovely. Boxer dog with a lampshade nooooo!

GrendelsMum · 29/12/2012 18:26

Who or what the heck is Ahern, anyway? I can only think of Caroline Aherne and I can't imagine anyone lusting after her bathroom. Is she a design guru on the side?

noddyholder · 29/12/2012 18:28

She does a bit on tv all faux bookcase wallpaper and black walls. And wacky objects not anything you would want to live with. In all my years working no one has ever requested that look though somewhat do I know [ love caroline though]

GrendelsMum · 29/12/2012 18:30

Oh, I see! I rather like that look. Although the black walled rooms must be terribly dark. But then if all your books are in the form of wallpaper, perhaps it doesn't matter if you can't see to read?

noddyholder · 29/12/2012 18:32

I think you should have what you love but bathrooms must be functional.

GrendelsMum · 29/12/2012 18:36

I've always yearned to have an impractical bathroom with a chaise longue overlooking a tennis court.

That's not really a bathroom, though, is it?

noddyholder · 29/12/2012 18:43

Grin I always treat it as a room if big enough. Had a fire once it was lovely but rarely lit it

kitsmummy · 30/12/2012 08:06

gosh this thread was a slow burner! thanks everyone for your thoughts and the links. I love the tiles that bonsoir and grendels linked to, but i can tell just by looking at them that they're going to be way out of budget Smile.

I think i'll stick with the slate and have a look for potential metro replacements, thanks again!

I think they'd be bloody awkward to clean, wouldn't they?

GrendelsMum · 30/12/2012 13:37

Ours seem tough as old boots so far, but it's early days.
