Apparently our fireplace is not suitable for a woodburnerSad
here isn't enough room to install it.The back pipe would be inaccessible to service and maintain/ sweep. The only solution would be to rip out the fireplace which is not an option as it is an original fireplace.Anyone else had his?

Maybe get another opinion?
Ask a fireplace installer not the people selling the woodburner. They may only be interested in selling their models and there might be other models that are suitable for your neds

Get more advice as you don't actually need a fireplace at all for a wood burner.

He is an installer. The fireplace is already there.he says that the pipe extruding from the back has to be at least 6 inches and then a t junction to go up the chimney and apparently my fireplace is too narrow.I have an original late 1930s fireplace with teapot brown curved tiles and a fantastic wooded surround.

I know nothing about woodburners (but would love one) but can't they be set up with the pipe extruding from the top or even the side, rather than the back?

our woodburner the flue comes out the top of the stove about a foot vertically and the fitter then put a 45 degree pipe angled back towards the chimney breast. The 45 degree pipe goes through the wall above the fireplace, higher than where the mantelpiece would have been and joins up with the chimney liner (not sure how they managed to connect them). There is a little panel in the front of the 45 degree section of pipe for cleaning. We could have had a longer vertical section and have the flue going into the chimney higher up the wall (and it also creates more heat) but didn't bother. This sounds like it would work for you.

You don't need a fireplace for a woodburner. You can fit one anywhere. All you need is a hearth to stand it on and a pipe through the wall. We have a tiny fireplace yet our woodburner manages to stand inside it, with a pipe out the top, and it was swept this year. You must have them swept yearly by a registered sweep who will give you a certificate of maintenance, otherwise your house insurance will be invalid if it starts a fire.

Actually ours would be better if it stood proud of the fireplace. It does chuck out a lot of heat but the walls around it are also really hot. That heat could be in the room.

Check out our fitter here. Probably nowhere near you but some good examples of different burners.

SMaths our mantelpiece goes up to the picture rail and then we have a small space and then fairly elaborate coving.I could not put a pipe through it or the tiles on the fireplace .We have an outer tiled arch and then a tiny inset so no room for pie out the top.I will try and do a photo tomorrow .Thank you very much for the suggestions.Food for thought.I am in colchester is that far from Wickam?

Google says if you go straight up the A12 its about 33 miles. Give them a ring, I'm sure they could advise you. The main guy there is called James and he's been doing burners for years. He's really good, he really knows his stuff.

Ooh I hope that's helped!

I think I have the same firelace (in green) and I see what you mean. I'm not up on building regs but is there anything you could do from the other side of the wall? Otherwise open fires are lovely Smile

If a normal stove won't fit what about an inset one.
