kitchen from scratch - where to buy, when?

we are making a new kitchen in our new (old) house and I'd love a bit of advice. We will buy IKEA units and have to buy all the white goods, oven etc (we also want to buy a chest freezer for the cellar). Is it worth trying to get all these things in the January sales and will it be easy to fit things into an IKEA kitchen (are sizes standard)? Would it be more economical/ better in any way to buy the whole lot from IKEA - does it have a Jan sale of its own? Or are Jan sales no longer a big thing since there are sales all year round. Any ideas of shops/ ways of saving money much appreciated. I've also no idea about brands and models of any of these things as have never bought or owned them before so any tips please.
Our kitchen will be 22 by 17 and we want to keep it fairly empty for three small children to play in, but any ideas about whether a sofa/ coffee table/ comfy area would work well?
MAny thanks!

They sell in the sales what they cannot sell on another day at full price.
So the really good stuff is packed away before the sales.
I have an Ikea kitchen and did not even consider getting appliances from them.

I get all my stuff from these people
www.southerndomestic.co.uk/products-southampton
especially the graded stock - which comes with fab markdowns but otherwise as new.

My (Siemens) fridge freezer had a dent - in the top
My (Bosch) dishwasher has a scratch - on the top - its under the counter
My (Neff) oven has a scratch and a dent on the side - its fitted into a unit
My (Neff) extractor has a scratch - on the back
My (Neff) hob has a dent on the bottom.
And the discounts on the others paid for the dishwasher ....

soft furnishings - go with a rug and a beanbag tops till you've lived in it for six months

Yes Ikea do offers, most commonly 3 appliances for the price of 2 and 10% of your total spend on an Ikea gift card. These are not normally limited to January but happen at various times throughout the year.

Although Ikea units aren't standard sizes themselves, all their appliance units will take standard sized appliances.

You can often negotiate reasonable discounts elsewhere by haggling when buying more than one appliance. I did this when buying our oven, hood and hob. Unlikely to end up cheaper than Ikea but perhaps better quality for the same price.

If you can wait until July, think about getting appliances from John Lewis. Lots of dented stuff but at the sides so can't be seen. You can haggle on price and you'll still get the standard JL guarantees
