Bamboo worktops

We're in the process of having the ground floor of our house extended and a new kitchen fitted. We have white gloss units on order and I'm trying to decide about worktops. We were going for wood (oak?), but then I saw bamboo in John Lewis and was pretty taken with it. Has anyone any experience of bamboo work surfaces? And if so, would you recommend your supplier? Thanks!

We have bamboo worktops that are about 2 years old, from this company.
We're very pleased with how they look, we've got off-white gloss units too, and bamboo flooring from the same supplier. It's cheaper than other real wood, but just as nice. Eco-friendly too according to the website.
It needs lots of oil when it's installed, and to be rubbed back and re-oiled every year. You need to be careful leaving wet things on it to avoid rings, and you need to wipe up water round the sink as its hard to completely seal it where it's been cut.

Our bamboo worktops are now 4 1/2 years old - picture of the kitchen on my photos
I'm horrible to them!
Before they were fitted I oiled them all over - sides everything - four times.
Since then they have had to lump it, other than a whoosh of Olive oil on any nasty marks.
Wipe down with a cloth after each meal.
The tea stains disappear into the grain.
Could do without the scorch marks but that's another story (not cooking related)
I think they are wonderful - and the offcuts make excellent shelves - as they are the same pattern on all surfaces!
