How to get enthusiastic about this new house?!

It was all head over heart.

The new house is in the town we want to live in, DD will get into the school we want her to go to. DP liked it as it has the most potential out of all the houses we saw (we could extend up into loft and out into garden.)

I never liked it particularly but was swayed by DP's ideas about what we could do to it in the future.

We don't have the money to do it up right now though. We have enough to paint, put new carpet in and that's about it.

The rooms are tiny, the kitchen is awful (and we're going to have to live with it for at least a year if not two). It's a modern house, I love period houses. The garden is small and needs major work. I'm not overly keen on the area. I knew all these things before we bought it, but was feeling more positive then.

Why did we buy it? It's the largest house we saw overall in terms of overall space (more rooms than the others, even if small ones!). Great school. Near the sea. The only one we saw really with enough room for us (just!).

People keep asking me if I'm excited. I say I am, but I'm not, I'm miserable. I don't want to show it to anyone!

I'm pregnant atm (due end Feb) and think maybe the hormones are getting to me! I knew all the house's faults before we bought it. It will be our first family home, and realistically, with the budget we had, we knew we had to compromise somewhere.

I think maybe I'm feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work that needs doing.

Can you help me get enthusiastic about this house or is it a lost cause?!

4 or 5 years is a good timeline. Don't feel disheartened about that.

Exactly! And it feels positive!

If you have been renting, wait until you get your first mortgage statement. Even though the interest is loads, you can actually SEE your money going somewhere - it's amazing.

Once your stuff is in the house and you have cleaned and painted it a bit it will feel better.

It is difficult to feel enthusiastic about anything involving any effort when you are pregnant and knackered!

Congrats on the new house.

Your emotions re your new house describe mine 2 years ago. I dismissed our house when I looked round as there was so much to do. I wanted to move into a newly renovated Edwardian property with 4 bedrooms....instead we bought a 3 bed semi with Everything needing doing! ( we could never afford the period property!) I wasn't looking forward to moving in etc etc. Once we did move in it suddenly felt 'right'. Neighbours are nice, 10 mins walk to school, long walk into town keeps us all fitter etc! I still really detested a lot of the house, manky light fittings, lary carpet, cheap laminate floor (now covered with cheap Ikea rugs), but the potential is there to make it look nice one day!
So, 2 years later we've finally started trying to make the house ours...made the garden into a usable space, white paint over horrible dark green and brown walls made all the difference in a couple of rooms, plus cheerful curtains cheaply made and those studenty paper lampshades which I far prefer to the hideous lights that they replaced!
I still hate my kitchen with a passion, it is far worse than yours sounds - it is crowded with 2 people in it, and is falling to pieces. This will be changed with an extension in the new year...whilst 2 years living with a bad kitchen has been annoying, it has meant we haven't made expensive mistakes and have had time to plan it properly.
What I am trying to say is don't underestimate the power of paint and new carpet to transform a house...and it's fab that you'll be by the sea! Hopefully you will stop feeling so overwhelmed and start to like your house!

The cooker is crap and freestanding, with an eye level grill on top

I love those cookers! Great for making grilled cheese toast for breakfast.

OP, what you are feeling is absolutely normal. It has taken us six painful years to renovate. But it is so worth it...or so I keep telling myself Grin

Congratulations on your new house!
