Hallway flooring - carpets, floorboards or something else?

I need to make a decision on flooring for our hallway (Victorian tetrrace) we currently have pine stripped floors (done by pervious occupiers) they are very damaged and draughty. Originally I thought about carpeting but with DD still needing the pushchair daily will I spend all my time hoovering up?

I've looked at a couple of 'wood effect' vinal flooring samples, and whilst they look nice, I can't help but think they won't suit the property.
Is carpet that bad?
Any other suggestions?
TIA

I have had tiles, real wood, carpet and laminate and thought about Karndean. It does rather depend on your budget. Overall I really like laminate. It has come a long way since its introduction in the 90s. True, it doesn't have the beauty of real wood but it is so easy to keep clean. I don't think I would have carpet. If you have a push chair, some time in the next few years you will be potty training Wink so go with something that you will not be scrubbing.

Shameless bump

I've def got a few year left of pushchairs/general floor scrubbing ahead. But is carpet really a no no?? Runners on top????

do you live in a detatched house? If not, hard flooring will irritate the neighbours when the family trample about.

I live in a Victorian terrace myself with old, draughty pine floorboards in our hallway. If I was to change it, I would go for laminate flooring. If I had loads of money, I would choose hardwearing bamboo flooring. Vinyl in a hallway does not suit period character, in my opinion (although I have vinyl in my kitchen). Carpet would look nice but perhaps too high maintenance.

We have bamboo flooring in the hall - quite a dark brown, polished. Has been down for about 3 years now - 3 DCs (one of which constantly kicks a ball around the hall, another of which wheels her parm up and down) - general constant use with heels / dirty shoes etc. Not noisy and although if you look very closely (hands and knees) you can see its scratched slightly in places, it still looks great and is a real, hard wearing practical floor for the hall.

We rented a house (victorian terrace) before this one where there was carpet in the hall - hated it. Had to have a runner on top to protect it - was always fussing about the children wiping their feet / taking their shoes off before they came in, cleaning the wheels of the pushchair before it came into the house for fear of ending up with dirty carpet. Runner always seemed to get skewed. I would never have carpet in the hall, unless you can live with it getting dirty and / or willing to replace at least every year.

I have tiles, and after having wood, and carpet, they are the easiest to keep clean. Carpets are the worst, you will be forever scrubbing the marks off.

You can have wood effect tiles. I really wanted them...see the link:
