Curtains and carpet necessary unfortunately necessary! Help keep it modern

ok well my interior style is usually stark White very modern, Elle deco type. this bedroom however is cold and road facing so the beautiful floor boards need to be covered. And the window needs curtains to insulate keep noise out, light etc. So what can I do to keep in with White room White bed and a piece or two of "designer type" furniture. Neutral carpets seem to be about, not sure a thick wooly fluffy one would work, and curtains well how can they look modern, is White a no no! Or could I really overdress windows to create something else.

All ideas welcome.

It's my bedroom but newborn will not be there forever, I'll keep a rug under it's crib I suppose and around room under it moves out. We've had newborn on carpet before so we will be armed! Thanks for reminding me though. Might as well do it properly, as it will be my grown up space which I do need.
You made me think about the shutters we do have a curve. Will call them in the morning as its a great idea.

A big advantage of rugs is that you can send them to the cleaners and they come back looking like new. I have a thick white wool rug in my sitting room that is thirty years old and it looks like new despite having had mugs of coffee etc dropped on it, endless footprints etc - I send it to the cleaners once a year.

How do they clean it have two lovely white wool woven rugs in front room, had them a year but my cleaners are nervous. Is their a particular method?

I second the use of shutters, we have a cold (ish) bedroom which is now a lovely cool off white and v pale grey and I couldn't find a way of dressing the windows to go, so we've just had shutters installed. I'm amazed at how they improve the insulation and make the room so much darker at night.

In terms of flooring have you thought about relaying wood with underfloor heating? We only have this in our bathroom at the moment, it makes such a difference, then you could go with some lovely textured rugs? Just a thought.

noddyholder · 08/12/2012 10:58

I would have a pure white thick wool carpet no texture at all I think they look a bit dated and not luxurious enough. Then maybe some heavy white curtains lined with something very stark and contemporary like Timorous beasties I love carpet!

noddyholder · 08/12/2012 11:02

lovely Looks peaceful grown up and elegant.

Bonsoir · 08/12/2012 11:21

Oh, the cleaning of rugs isn't done at the dry cleaners. They have to send them to a specialist place with huge dry cleaning facilities (rollers) to lay the rugs flat. Do you live near a big city?

Noddy- that room is very luxe. Mine is not that grand and high, I think curtains would look nice if they were. There's a radiator under the windowsill so I won't be able to benefit from that long look. The carpet in that photo is quite nice. Also I'd still need windows covered somehow to keep privacy when curtains are opened? Any ideas. Any carpet links Xmas Smile

Shutters have been quite a faff to organise so far this morning. Thing that draws me to them is the warmth I keep reading about.

I would personally go for floorboards and do anything to make it work for you, I think I've seen my children puke on carpets one too many times. They're such a hassle to keep really clean and looking fresh and nice and not grubby!

Bonsoir · 08/12/2012 12:24

In London there have to be speciality rug cleaners - ask around if your local cleaners cannot help, or google.

CashewNuts · 08/12/2012 12:29

Will do thanks. Freshen up for the new year. Didn't want to replace them just yet!
You're righttrying but sick children would be excluded from my haven and shoes etc! Well until newborn can be moved out.

We have had cream 100% boucle in our living rooms and bedrooms for the past 3 years, it still looks as good now as when fitted. We always take our shoes off in the hall. We too had problems with stripped boards being too cold. Once the dc got to the crawling stage I hated them crawling around on a cold hard floor! The thickest underlay has made a huge difference too Smile

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 08/12/2012 14:21

You can still have floor-length curtains with a radiator under the window. You just have to hang the pole so that it sits away from the wall and the curtains can then open and close freely, without touching the radiator or having it distort the way they hang.
You can get longer pole mounts (forget what they're called but you know what I mean - brackets?), or just screw a block of wood into the wall on each side and mount the brackets on that.

If you look at the California Company link from earlier, you can get a quote pretty quickly by inputting your dimensions, plus the style you want, size of slats, colour etc, and you can fiddle around with different combinations until you're happy.
They'll also send out samples really quickly. We DH went for the diy option, but I think they get good reviews for their installation service.

CashewNuts · 09/12/2012 10:54

Shotgun - I would rather not have the DIY option DH is not free at all to do it, so I spoke to the lady she was lovely but said their sister company could do it shutterly fabulous. However, they have very very long lead times and no appointment till the new year just to measure. So we are looking towards march! I've booked another one in to come over soon. This project has a time pressure on it as baby is coming soon. Many many thanks for you're idea and suggesting shutters.
I cant cover the radiator at all it's our only hope for warmth, that with the new wool under our feetSmile
