Do I need an oven hood? Will it prevent grease buildup?

Just wondering how effective oven hoods are at extrcting the grease from the air? Currently cleaning out kitchen cupboard and it amazed me how easily grease seems to build up! Hoping an extractor will resolve this somewhat?....any buying tips? Dont want to spend much.

My dh finally sorted out the ducting for my cooker hood yesterday and I can't tell you how very happy, fulfilled and complete it has made me.

For the past year we have had to use it in recirculation mode and it drove me stir crazy. I cook. Lots. I like meat. Lots. And I like to brown it in my lovely de buyer frying pan. I therefore regularly had to open the back doors (in Winter = brrrr), shut the kitchen door and scream fish-wife style at any small children that might try to wander in/out "shut the door NOW!!!". If this procedure was not followed rigidly then the whole street got to hear our top of the range mains-wired fire alarm system.

I suppose a big recirculating hood can work as a grease trap. It seems to do that whether or not you bother to turn it on though.

Yes an oven hood will prevent grease and stop your kitchen from smelling. You will need a good grease filter too, and change it regularly. Dunelm mills are the best ones ,they last around six months and are the cheapest around. Smile

Hi I know this is an old post but debating to get a downdraft . Has yours stood up to the time test?
