Front door in the middle of the house... How important?

We're having an extension... My architect said we should try and move our front door in the middle of the property, but would it put you off a house if it wasn't?

Our house is mostly one room plus hall deep and currently it would run left to right as you look at it like this, would you hate this?

Ok.. Lounge, front door, downstairs loo, study, family room, utility room door (utility room is actually behind family room), double garage, maybe double carport...

I think it depends on the house/style. The eye does tend to prefer symmetry I think but I think also a million executive detached new build estates have made the middle front door thing also potentially bland (I fell for it and hated the house for 8 years). Would personally not consciously sway me. May do sub-consciously. I would only move it if you think it would look better and not compromise on the flow/layout. They are ultimately way more important for living there.

I like a front door in the middle. Do I like it enough that I would pay more than £200 extra to get it? No, I'm convinced not.

I wouldn't be put off a place if the front door weren't centrally positioned. You mention a downstairs loo so I assume there's 2 storeys, the front door is normally near the stairs so if moving the front door takes it away...

Funny, until you started this thread I don't think I've ever really thought about it. I take it there's at least one other exit on the ground floor?

We live in a bungalow, so the front door is about 2/3 of the way along, but I also can't think of any friends/family whose front door is right in the middle. It does look nice especially in big grand looking houses but it wouldn't put me off a house.

The front door is not in the middle of many houses. The really expensive and desirable Victorian terraces near where I live, for example, don't have the front door positioned centrally. It doesn't seem to put anyone off.

Thinking about it, only my current house has the front door in the middle of the property, and it's a PITA! There's no hallway, so you come into a tiny little room at the front, squeeeeeeeze yourself round the front door and then go into the living room. We have to get all deliveries of large items to the back of the house.

So no, front door offset doesn't bother me unless it made the house look really unbalaced. My parents' front door is at the side Xmas Grin

It looks nice, but it wouldn't factor in my decision to buy a house. The layout inside would be more important.

Front door isn't even on the front of my house and I love the quirky layout. So wouldn't sway me, no.

CarpeJugulum · 04/12/2012 09:41

Ours is to the right of the house as you look at it, and is beside the drive and garage. I actually find it quite useful as I had it gated so DS couldn't get to the door and escape. Also stops draughts Xmas Smile

Thanks ladies.
Yes there's another door into the utility room next to the garage door.
This planning lark is harder than I thought.

The front door leads into a hallway which has stairs and doors to lounge, dining room, what will be the study and the d/s loo. I think the architect would like to move the front door to where the loo is and move the loo, seems like a lot of work for a few feet, and actually it still wouldn't be central...

You also need to consider how the house looks on the outside on the first floor -- as often ground floor and first floor windows are already lined up - would the door line up nicely with first floor windows too?
