Wetroom or shower tray?

Some of you will be sick of my indecision regarding the new ensuite/shower room but we have now chosen a builder and got a start date for the extension - yay!

DH and I would like a wet room with a shower at one end across the width of the room with a simple glass partition between the shower and the rest of the room but the builder is suggesting a shower tray may be simpler. He is happy for us to buy the tray early so he builds the room around it so it looks pretty much like I'd imagined it, but with a different colour floor in the shower area.

Would you go for the shower tray option as less likely to leak etc, or stick with my artistic ideal?

Can you use any sort of tile for wetroom floors?

You can get coloured shower trays - either stone resin ones or steel enamel (Bette do these) so you can have a bit of both. From what I have read on here, unless your wetroom is on a concrete ground floor they can be leak prone as the floor is almost impossible to get stable enough for a true wetroom. Not sure if this is tru but we went for a showertray in the end. We went for a Bette one which sits flush to the floor.

Just been through this decision and went for the shower tray option in the end. Cost and risks of leaks were the main reasons, we have a wet room shower in the house we've been renting and it does leak a bit and it's a pain to go back in after a shower to brush your teeth as the floor is still wet!

I think I'd go for a shower tray in your case. In a small room where it would take up a lot of space, a wet room makes sense (I'm considering converting the downstairs shower room into a wet room as the tray takes up such a lot of space), but it seems like you have space for a tray.

Thank you all.

It looks like DH is leaning towards the tray option now after talking to a mum on the playground whose wetroom has been a catalogue of issues :(
I'm going to look into coloured shower trays though, thanks Fishfingers

I would go for shower tray as well. I've had a wetroom and it has a slow leak problem through the grout. Luckily it was on the ground floor, over concrete floors. The only leak we see is therefore is on the floor of the store cupboard next door to the shower. I would really really hate it if it's leaking through wooden floors upstairs! We were given some grout sealant and whenever we see a 'leak', we have to re-seal all the floor grout. It's a massive PITA.

I mean we have a bit of wet carpet in the cupboard. We just had to always keep an eye on it.
