What colour for this kitchen?

We are in the process of choosing a new kitchen. We have a modern house and want something that is modern without being bleak. Once the builders have done their thing we will have a long rectangular room with SW facing patio doors at one end so very sunny in the afternoon, but it will be quite dark at the other end.

I quite like the kitchen below because it is a bit ugly, chunky, quite simple, which suits the house, but the inset handles, and the wood grain on the surface add interest. The only trouble is I am not sure about any of the colours. I think we want a paint colour rather than one of the stains.

We are lusting after a white quartz worktops, but probably don't have the budget for it.

WWYchoose? Thank-you.

I like mussel and graphite

CuddyMum · 29/11/2012 14:54

I like the first one. Where is that from? :)

annalouiseh · 29/11/2012 15:20

there all uform doors.
depending what supplier you get it from will depend on your carcass quality, so have a look at that also as the door will be the same from all

LaGuerta · 29/11/2012 16:01

Thanks all.

Yes I like mussel too, but I think graphite might be a bit dark at the dark end of the kitchen. If we just get mussel everywhere then it might be a bit anaemic.

Part of me likes the ginger colour, but as my Mum would tell me, "You'll tire of it very quickly." Annoyingly she is probably right.

The brand name for the door manufacturer is "Kitchen Stori".

We are planning to design it ourselves and then order on a supply only basis from an Internet seller. Any advice on how to gauge the carcass quality? Presumably look at mm thicknesses and hinge quality?

It won't be anaemic it will be subtle and elegant Wink

annalouiseh · 29/11/2012 16:44

the mm thickness doesnt mean the thicker the better quality.
look for someone who offers you at least 10 colours, this will mean they have more flex on any sizes you want and can build to your order.
make sure you have pre-built. Factory built glue and dowel construction is far more rigid than cam and dowel (flat pack).
if you have any odd spaces your supplier should be able to get the carcass built to what you need so no adjustments are required on site.
Also look for a carcass without 10,000 shelf holes like ikea's.
Looks not very nice once you open the unit and not really needed.
Hinges and drawers - Blum & Hettich are the best you will get if you want it to last.

Kitchen Stori are the uk main part of uform - uform are irish

Subtle and elegant sounds good. Smile

Thanks for the carcass advice. Much appreciated, and easy to overlook when you are trying to save money by going for the Internet approach.

I am taking delivery of a Stori/Uform kitchen in a few weeks.
We eventually went for shade our supplier had on a sample door called Light Blue, but which resembles F&B's Parma Gray.
I liked Mussel, fussy DH did not. We let the kids help decide in the end.
I also recall a lovely light grey which DH vetoed.

You really need to get a look at some samples because the colours are completely different on a computer screen.

noddyholder · 29/11/2012 18:17

Agree with annalouise re rigid carcasses factory glued etc

LaGuerta · 30/11/2012 19:03

I hope you like your kitchen Alpha. My DH has been away for most of this week, so his preferences aren't even factored in yet! I was contemplating the ballroom blue. Blue would be lovely although it is what MIL has Wink. I think if I let my children choose we would end up with a ginger kitchen. Grin

Agree that factory assembled cabinets is the way to go.

Thanks again everyone. I will doubtless be back in a few days with more deliberations.
