ridiculous quote from gas engineer?

had a gas leak.
grid turned off the gas and the local engineer who was able to come did some repairwork (disconnecting part of the old pipes). gave us a quote to replace with copper for 300£. it's about 6 meters of pipe following the wall, easy access.
is this about right? emergency call out was already 300£...

are there price lists on the net as guidance? (couldn't find any)

Dh (heating engineer) says no but then it could depend on where you are, London ... Yes possibly!

ClueLessFirstTime · 26/11/2012 17:46

yep, london.
I was hoping it would be less. 600 seems rather a lot for a couple of hours work + materials...would an engineer agree to a reduction if I haggle hardask nicely?

have no cooker now.
thanks

oh and it was (sort of) the engineers fault. he thought the pipe with the leak was a dead end and only when he turned the gas back on discovered that that was (also) the pipe to the hob.

Sorry didn't read the op properly 300 callout fee , when was it Christmas Day?? Jeeeeezz!

Yes London is costly we're only just outside London but that still seems very excessive! I would ring around and get a quote or if you can't wait then YES YES YES haggle!

ClueLessFirstTime · 26/11/2012 18:44

yes, callout (100) + work/materials (200) (paid that because I thought that's it and all done).
then he tested the system and discovered that the stove is now disconnected for sone reason he thought that the new pipe to the boiler also goes to the stove.
so new pipe to re-connect would again be the call out fee + work/materials.

I would try get him to waver the callout fee with the argument that if he had completed works correctly the first time he would not be returning!

ClueLessFirstTime · 26/11/2012 19:28

we are now thinking of getting rid of the gas stove. but getting the right socket would also be a hassle...

WTF??? £300 is completely and utterly outrageous. We had a pipe re-routed in our kitchen and it cost £60.

dh is in a bad mood and researching how to complain. I'm in a bad mood. it's dc's birthday soon and I can't bake a cake...
