Breakfast Bar Stools

FishfingersAreOK · 22/11/2012 11:12

OK. Need a couple of these to go with my beautiful new granite breakfast bar. (Yep, smuggy, boasty bit - let me off please Grin). Was just going to get something not too expensive. Probably black saddle like. Simple. Very tuck awayable.

And then I wondered if there was any mumsnet wisdom to be shared. Never had a breakfast bar/stool before. Is is a case of what ever you like? Or is it like cabin beds/high sleepers if only I had asked on here before I would never have bought the bloody thing that there are actually some real PITA elements to avoid.

Your wisdom, as ever, gratefully received please.

Be aware that bar stools usually come in various heights - one height more suited to breakfast bar that is at worktop level, and a higher one more suited to high bar tables / breakfast bars that sit above worktop level.

Do you have young children? If so the other things to think about are:

  • a proper back (i.e. more like a high up chair than a stool) as otherwise I worry about them going off the back; and
  • something pretty sturdy, so that it is difficult to knock over whilst they are climbing it, or push away from the worksurface by pushing back against it. We have very heavy sturdy Harry Bertoia stools (bought 2nd hand....they were pricey enough that way, no way on earth I was going to fork out the new price!) and I feel much happier about my 3 and 4 year old climbing those than at a friend's house where they clamber about on her much flimsier lighter stools.

I would avoid the bar stools that have the large disc like base because they get really dusty and dirty. I now have a cheap set from eBay with actual legs. I'd also avoid the gas lifting type as they soon stop going up and down (I blamed my teenagers and their hoards of friends).

We used to have the saddle type ones and I like those. They are a PITA for cleaning though.

The one thing that I did find was that we used to go through them quite fast. No matter how expensive they were, they would break.

I haven't got a BB now, but we got my DM these. I have them in my pub and can confirm they are sturdy.

They did have to be trimmed down a bit though, not sure if that is because DM's breakfast bar is low or the stools are high!

Great website. A bit cheesy but I like the American diner style. I think we are ready to purchase a new set of bar stools. This will be our third set in four years but they do get a lot of use.

We went for this in the end. DH browsed tonight and actually realised we didn't want a black one after all....www.amazon.co.uk/Bahamas-Solid-HIGH-Stool-DELIVERY/dp/B007L8KK3Q/ref=pd_sim_sbs_kh_2

Actually got seconds for £48 each. Am guessing they will get beaten up soon anyway. And hopefully these will last longer than Tesco gas lifty one. Nothing to break Grin

Thank you for advice

Ooh I really like those! Good choice I think. Less things to go wrong and attractive too.
