What does your wood burning stove stand on?

We're in the process of chosing a wood burning stove (extremely excited!) and we're trying to plan what the fireplace will actually look like. We're thinking of spending a bit more on something like a Morso and saving money by getting the fireplace tiled in cheaper floor tiles of some kind. Does this sound like a good plan? What does your stove stand on, and are you happy with it?

it's a pellet stove, but it stands on concrete, which is tiled - this was in the context of a new build. It works perfectly.

nocake · 18/11/2012 21:17

We have a slate tiled hearth and yes, we're very happy with it.

AMumInScotland · 18/11/2012 21:19

Ours just sits in a corner of the room on a concrete plinth which sticks out diagonally into the room, covered in sort of terracotta tiles. No fireplace at all, it's a 70's house which didn't have anything like that to start with, so we didn't bother adding anything around the stove.

Slate

SwedishEdith · 18/11/2012 21:21

We've used dark grey quarry tiles. I think it works well together

libelulle · 18/11/2012 21:22

Reclaimed quarry tiles, red and white. Total cost about 150 quid including mortar, plus about a fortnights worth of evenings and a lot of swearing to cut and lay the things. They look fab though!

libelulle · 18/11/2012 21:22

Sorry, red and black- don't think you can get white quarry tiles!

Paving slabs,on top of red brick with a floor to ceiling redbrick fireplace. When it was suggested by the builder ,I wasnt sure at all but after the stove and installation costs ,we had to make some economies and as we had these materials to hand, left over from a previous building project it made sense to use them.It actually looks fab,far better than I imagined,

We have two woodburners - one on white limestone tiles and the other on pamments in an inglenook.

mumblechum1 · 18/11/2012 21:41

Ours sits on a slab of black granite which is great as really easy to keep clean, just hoover and mop once a week.

Brick Hearth

JudeFawley · 18/11/2012 21:48

Ours is in an inglenook on flagstones.

thenightsky · 18/11/2012 21:51

mine is on brick hearth.

Selks · 18/11/2012 21:54

Watching this with interest - am about to replace my hearth that my stove sits on. Am thinking black quarry tiles (with black grout).

emsyj · 18/11/2012 21:56

Hearth was made of bricks, then covered in black quarry tiles.

Coconutfeet · 18/11/2012 21:56

Thanks everyone. It's nice to hear what everyone's got as I only know a couple of people with stoves. I had been thinking about something like this but now wonder if that would be a bit busy, as it sounds like most people have got quite plain surfaces.

I absolutely LOVE those tiles Coconut, I want to use them for the bathroom floor but they are too £££££££ so may just put them in the downstairs loo! I think they look classic and wouldn't be too much with a stove at all.

They are quite big though aren't they?

Florence37 · 19/11/2012 09:38

My newly fitted stove stands on a black honed granite hearth. It's very easy to clean and looks great.

Coconutfeet · 19/11/2012 17:05

They're gorgeous aren't they Emsyj. Don't think we can afford to have them in an actual room so putting them in the hearth seems like a nice compromise. Not sure if the work of laying a concrete base and then tiles would be any cheaper than a lovely slab of granite or similar though...

Oh, I was swooning over those tiles last time I was in Topps (regular occurence Blush) They are lovely. Have them. I'm sure there's a picture of a Morso stove on similar looking tiles (in the catalogue?).Would work well

CaliforniaLeaving · 19/11/2012 19:34

Ours stands on a low platform of red bricks (two bricks high) the bricks cover the wall behind the wood stove and chimney pipe also, all the way to the ceiling. No fireplace here. The bricks seem to absorb a lot of warmth. More so than the tiles that our friends have (same set up only big 12 inch tiles instead of bricks)

TalkinPeace2 · 19/11/2012 21:35

slate slabs - garden paving type - cut to fit perfectly by my tame brickie

gremlinmum · 28/11/2012 16:59

toughened glass!
