The Great Council House Transformation

We have bought an ex council house. It is about 40 years old and has not been renovated at all. Kitchen, bathroom, heating, windows - all needing replaced.

We have a renovation budget of max £25k and really want to transform the house.

I think the kitchen will be Ikea, with posh sink and appliances

Bathroom - don't know but no built in units to keep costs down

Gas Central heating (most likely) after a lengthy MN discussion, and several weeks of putting jumpers on and taking them off we have seen the light - electric storage has to go. Quite like the sound of wood pellet, but DH not keen.

Electrics - electrician thinks we will need to rewire

I need help deciding on where to buy the bathroom, tiles, appliances and any advice on colours, decorating etc

We will be going with neutral colours, but I can't decide between going pure white walls or a very light grey.

Yes, I love nooks. We thought about doing something under the stairs, but went with a wine cellar / storage / shoe shelves.

I'd love a reading nook somewhere.

I see you have a Schuller kitchen linked on your pinterest board. We got a v.v. good value schuller kitchen from these guys - www.pricemykitchen.co.uk/ - I'd thoroughly recommend them. I think the pricing for the cheaper (but still v. high quality) ranges compares v. favourably with Ikea and co. They have a showroom in Frimley if that is anywhere near you.

Also, I should say that the ballpark estimate on that website, based on what I fairly randomly initially estimated we'd need in terms of cupboard configurations, turned out to be pretty accurate.

That is interesting - we saw their kitchen in Germany, if I remember rightly. Will have a look at that website. Thanks.

if you need some reputable tradesmen, i know a few locally. We got our brand new boiler (Worcester) off ebay for a good bit cheaper than anywhere else and got a local plumber fit it. Much cheaper than going to a company.

its rootietootie here btw, in case your wondering :)

lol at your new name.

We have a plumber and joiner, they have recommended electrician and painter/decorator but haven't tried them out yet.

If you must have a German kitchen you could try this lot - www.kutchenhaus.co.uk/ if you can handle the Ginglish name. Irritates me immensely.

We have an ex council that we are slowly doing up. Just done the (small) bathroom with plain white tiles from topps tiles -dirt cheap. Thin navy pencil tiles midway up the wall (ebay) white floorboard effect laminate on special in homebase; simple suite from bathstore and blue patterned splashback tiles behind sink (fired earth sale) The none tiled walls are a soft grey colour and we have put some deep open shelving up for baskets and storage (and to cover the ugly/weird sloping section courtesy of the stairs underneath.) Pics on pinterest for those interested! Next up is the living room!

MmeLindor · 21/10/2012 12:10

Thanks, will have a look at them.

Costume
Love your idea of the blue stripe to break up the wall. Really nice
