Need some ideas of what to put in our new kitchen. Things like gadgets you have/wish you had and good storage ideas to save clutter.

Please help!

Thanks

Wine fridge. I have drawers vs cupboards for pots/pans/dishes etc and much prefer it.

Doretaball · 20/09/2012 10:37

Hello. I had a new kitchen a couple of years ago and unfortunately had to rush the design. But I do love my pull out larder cupboard, with wire shelves. You can really see what's in there. And I love my wide deep drawers for pans etc, so much easier than struggling to the back of cupboards etc.

I wish I'd thought a bit more about what I had and where I'd put things, like microwave, toaster etc as I don't like having them out on the top. I was more concerned about the big things, fridges etc.

I also really regret getting an integrated dishwasher, we've had nothing but problems with it and now the space is a tiny bit too tight to fit a free standing one in so we need to get it all adjusted, luckily it's on the end of the island so there is some tweaking room.

I've also got my sink in the island facing into the kitchen. Loads of people told me not to do it as "a sink should be looking out of the window". But I stuck to my guns and love it, much more sociable than having your back to everyone.

Sorry for rambling message, heavily pg and slowly losing the plot!

Good luck and have fun.

the best thing in my kitchen is the pull-out hose-thing on the tap - I use it all the time, great for rinsing the sink, dirty plates etc. I'm surprised how much i use it.

A Scavolini kitchen with a Quooker boling tap

HantsLN · 08/01/2018 17:27

I've recently bought exactly that, but have had nothing but regret about the whole thing. The cupboards are very attractive, yes, but the customer service a nightmare. I'd take care before being sold into the brand, because when something goes wrong and if the re-seller fails to live up to their part of the contract, you'll be obliged to go to the Courts. The manufacturer will be unlikely to step in to help. That's been my experience anyway.

QuitMoaning · 08/01/2018 18:28

I have 15 wide drawers in my new kitchen (and 3 normal width) and I love them

Also a large corner pantry unit which is awesome.

I have hob on the island as I feel more sociable when cooking. The sink is at the edge so I can push dirty dishes in dishwasher/in sink and out of the way so I can enjoy my dinner.

HantsLN · 09/01/2018 10:55

Scavolini furniture is indeed lovely and the quality of the design is indisputable. Your kitchen sounds great. But if, on the installation date, half the drawers had been missing, that super corner pantry had been damaged and the hob didn't work, I imagine it would have been a bit less awesome to have received. My recent experience has been along those lines, yet my supplier's response has been only to deny/ laugh at my concerns and then threaten to sue me for the outstanding 5%, even though the kitchen remains faulty and unfinished. If that had been your experience, well, I'd imagine you'd feel a bit moany yourself. I only wish I'd done more to check my re-seller before ordering, because those big brand associations have turned out to be pretty valueless.

Boiling tap
Pan drawers
Lots of plug sockets!

DustandRubble · 09/01/2018 11:20

My must haves where drawers over cupboards. Getting pans/plates/bowls is so much easier, no more precarious stacks of crockery to negotiate.

We are getting a pull out larder unit now which I am very excited about.

Good lighting, having lights hitting the worktops properly so you can see.

I am meh about boiling water taps. Handy when you want to do pasta. But I don’t like them for making tea because I am weird and need to switch a kettle on.

whiskyowl · 09/01/2018 13:16

Mine is really boring, and simple: storage that fits perfectly into drawers and cupboards so everything is kept neat and in order!

I don't get the boiling water tap thing. What's wrong with kettles?! Grin

feve17 · 09/01/2018 14:57

@whiskyowl Kettles are fine but once you've had a boiling water tap you'll never go back! haha

-I agree with all the suggestions to drawers over cupboards, but they are more expensive that cupboards so try to get 1 or 2 big sets in as appose to lots of smaller sets if you can, it's more practical.
-Task lighting under the wall units a must.
-I love my steam oven because I eats lots of veggies.
-Instead of a pull out larder I got a bigger unit, 600mm & had individual drawers put inside it's amazing & fits TONNES in it!

whiskyowl · 09/01/2018 16:12

Grin I'm going to be converted and then wish I'd got one, aren't I?

Seriously, though, I like my kettle. I like the whole rhythm of making a cup of tea. I would like it even more if my DH didn't insist on having one that could raise water to different temperatures, thus ruling out all of the best kettles on the market. Apparently it makes all the difference to the one cup of green tea he remembers to drink a month.

Baxdream · 09/01/2018 16:21

As much as I love mine already I get what you mean about the routine. I'm still at the stage of missing the waiting part of making tea 😂. But I'm sure I'll get used to that and the convenience is fabulous

DustandRubble · 09/01/2018 16:23

I have lived for long periods in a house with one and I still am unconvinced by hot water taps. It just ruins making a cup of tea for me.

QuitMoaning · 09/01/2018 22:17

I am not convinced by them. I make about 8 cups of tea on a Monday (wfh) and about 8 the rest of the week in total. I never have to wait for kettle to boil as you put kettle on, get cup, get tea bag, Fetch milk from fridge and then the kettle is about ready.
They are around £500 to £1000 and that pays for a lot of kettles. I decided against one.

wowfudge · 10/01/2018 07:57

@whiskyowl just buy yourself a decent kettle and use it for whatever you are doing. Then you can have a boil off competition between the kettles and prove yours is better and more economical to use. Seriously, if you use it more just get what you want. It's what I do!

whiskyowl · 10/01/2018 08:24

wowfudge - I LOVE the Stelton Emma kettle. DH harumphed at it, but I think it's gorgeous. It is ridiculously expensive for a boiling pot, though.

Twalva · 10/01/2018 10:48

Hot water tap is my single most favourite thing in my kitchen. Obviously it’s great for making tea but no more waiting around for pans of water to boil for pasta, rice and veg and makes cooking that much quicker
