Mice infestation in loft - is it worth saving the insulation?

Lovely little critters. Lots of droppings amongst the insulation. And I mean lots, and presumably urine evrywhere too. And some dead mice. We have builders in and they need to access the roof space but at the moment it is considered hazardous.

One company said they will remove the insulation, but there is a high disposal cost. It also means we will have to replace it. Will we be able to get the grant for this?

Won't the mice just come back? Does anyone have cellulose based insulation (made from treated, shredded newspaper) and is this really mouse-proof?

Not very exciting I know, but anyone else dealt with this?

I've always understood mice like to make nests in shredded newspaper

You might consider rigid insulating foam boards next time, such as Kingspan they will be much easier to keep clean and not good for nesting. More expensive though.

Agree about normal newspaper but apparently something in the binder or fireproofing irritates their eyes and lungs though so they avoid it like the plague!

We could do foam boards instead though, if we do end up replacing - will investigate Kingspan, thanks.
