A thread on here made me think that i'm perhaps being a bit of a scruffy cow.

We move tomorrow, I am surrounded by boxes and 2 small children. Much as I would like to give my house a thorough industrial clean before we leave, I know that's just not going to happen due to time contraints. I mean, it is generally clean and I'll be hoovering each room and wiping down the woodwork as it empties tomorrow, the bathroom and kitchen have already been scrubbed but I fully expect that I'll miss a few cobwebs / dust from skirting boards.

I expect to have to deep clean an house I move into and I always have in the past. Should I be leaving the house spotless? Am I a scruffy cow? Go on, tell me - I can take it. Grin

Japple, it's been a stressful sale but moving day is (almost) here! I thought we would never get there. I'll do my best but as you say - lots of other things to think about and do and then I'll only go and clean the new house. Too much cleaning for my liking.

Goodness no. What you are doing sounds more than fine.

Like you I expect to have to deep clean when moving in. I just don't expect somewhere to be so filthy that I don't want to put anything down in the meantime Grin but doesn't sound like your place will be anything like that grim!

There you Go! Enjoy your new challenges! Luck to you All.Jill.

That sounds like as much as I did. Impossible to do more on completion day when all your stuff is being carried off and you've got two littlies running around. Plus I knew our buyers were planning to redecorate and do some other bits of work before they moved in, so it seemed pointless to flog myself to death.

Sorry I'm the opposite, I would be mortified if I didn't leave the house in a pristine condition. I suppose if you're never likely to see / have to deal with the buyers, it doesn't matter as much, but if you're only moving locally and might bump into them, I'd have to scrub every surface within an inch of its life pay for someone to do it.

Every house I've moved out of I have left immaculate (the one in Belgium, because of the laws & our pain in the neck landlord, I was literally on my hands and knees wiping kitchen tiles just before the inspection).

Every single house I have moved into has required days of scrubbing before I felt comfortable. And I'm not even close to houseproud/picky.

I fully expect the same to happen in a couple of weeks when we move again. Sad

I must admit I am the sort of person who wants the house to be spotless when I move out.

With our last house, DH and DD moved ahead of me due to work and the day before completion. So I went back to the empty house after work and spent over 5 hours cleaning if from top to bottom. (yes I know I am sad Smile).

When I made it up to the rental house a couple of days later, I cleaned that from top to bottom as well. DH had unpacked bits but had left the kitchen stuff etc as he knows what I am like.

I also came over to our current house a couple of days before we actually moved in and gave it a thorough clean. Cleaned it again after we had moved in!

Dotty342kids · 20/09/2012 12:21

I have to say I always give the house a good clean but by that I mean hoovering, cleaning windowsills and making sure the bathrooms are clean - nothing is worse than arriving to someone else's bathroom mank!
But I don't go overboard as the removals folk will ensure a fiar bit of dust and dirt flies in when they're in and out. Leave it as you'd want to find it is the best option!
