hiya all, we are thinking of relocating to the east midlands , ideally around 1 to 1.5 hours commute to nottingham (reason for this my partner wants to live closer to his mum and dad) . Can anyone recommend a nice family friendly village with good schools? many thanks!

Hi
Notts
Leics
Derbys
??

LadySybildeChocolate · 11/09/2012 23:46

Sandiacre is nice. It's a little closer to Nottingham though, about 30 mins away.

Rhianna1980 · 11/09/2012 23:50

thank you . i will have a look. i have been on the rightmove website and looking at potential houses and villages . It is quite hard to tell how nice the area is from just looking at the house, so I thought I should probably first do a bit of research on potential area of where I would like to move to then look for houses than the other way round.

There's a lot of villages around Nottingham. I know Derbyshire well, Duffield is lovely and has great schools, houses are a little pricey though.

KellyMarieTunstall · 11/09/2012 23:55

Melbourne in Derbyshire

Oakham in Leicestershire both nice medium sized villages with good schools and infrastructure

iseenodust · 12/09/2012 10:35

We have relatives who live in East Leake which they like very much and seems to be a thriving village with school and shops.

Yorky · 12/09/2012 12:38

Does it have to be a village? Would a small town do, or a nice suburb?
Lots of nice places less than an hour from Nottingham - or do you not want to be too close to the ILs Grin
Which direction would you prefer? What about work?

tara0202 · 12/09/2012 12:49

Hose on the leics/notts border is very nice.

ooooh, I can answer this! Woodhouse Eaves or Quorn are nice, plus my parents still live in WE! About 5 miles from J23 and so perhaps 40 mins to Nottingham centre

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/09/2012 13:24

btw would avoid NW Leics, it can be quite rough in certain parts. I think Melbourne used to fit into that catagory

ouryve · 12/09/2012 13:28

Uttoxeter might be just a bit far if you want to make that commute daily. Lovely market town with fab secondary school though - surrounded by lots of nice villages.

Boggler · 12/09/2012 13:30

I see a couple of posters have already recommended Duffield, I had a friend who lived there and I always thought that if I had to move north that I would definitely choose Duffield - it's lovely.

Rhianna1980 · 12/09/2012 13:44

hiya , thank you so much for your input . I am just going to go and have a look at these places you mentioned. We are flexible in where we go as my partner works from home. We wont be commuting to Nottingham other than when we want to visit family. One of the main things for us is being next to really good primary and secondary school.

I would ideally want to find a house on the east side / south east side of nottingham.

Right I am off to read about the towns you guys recommended.

Is Olney in Bucks too far for you?

Sausagedog27 · 12/09/2012 20:03

Southwell, Norwell, Collingham or lots of nice areas around Newark.

fossil97 · 12/09/2012 20:05

Leicestershire has some good schools - Ashby de la Zouch grammar is very sought after I believe, that's a lovely small town and near Melbourne.

tiredemma · 12/09/2012 20:10

Southwell. Tuxford. Also love love Newton Solney which is closer to Burton upon Trent.

sleepdodger · 12/09/2012 20:10

Woodhouse eave vair naice but house prices match Grin
Lots around there nice avoid Coalville direction it's cheap for a reason
Further south into leics nice area and reasonable is birstall which would e quick ride into own for train connections

WhoWhatWhereWhen · 12/09/2012 20:13

Southwell or Farnsfield

Used to live in Wingerworth near Chesterfield great for families with v good primary schools. Some lovely villages and town in this neck of the woods like Ashover, Baslow, Matlock, Hathersage. Might be a bit far north for you but many commute to Nottingham & Sheffield from these places as most have good links via rail & M1.

Lilymaid · 14/09/2012 10:04

Oakham (Rutland) - small town by Rutland Water. Less than 1 hour into Nottingham on the A606.
