Mains Fire Alarm Chirping

why is it doing that?
It's driving me crazy. Does anyone know what is causing it and (more importantly):
How do I get it to stop?

The battery needs changing (even wired detectors have them as back up for power cuts)

They usually also have a back up battery which chirps when it runs low. I expect that's the cause. And some of them are fussy as to the brand of battery you put in. Had a fun evening once driving around north London looking for a particle square Duracell battery as nothing else would do

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/09/2012 19:49

So if I take out the battery will it stop, or does it need a replacement?

not necessarily. I have the same problem. I have changed the batteries twice it is still beeping. it has become incredibly sensitive and goes off the minute the grill is on. I turned mine off at the fuse and it still beeped (so i reckon there is some sort of a fault but what now....)

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 11/09/2012 20:30

Another thought...do you hoover it out sometimes? It could be dusty.

tricot39 · 11/09/2012 20:36

You need a replacement battery.
Also a hoover as suggested would be sensible.

RumpledTitSkin · 11/09/2012 20:40

These alarms are normally only good for ten years too though, so if it still beeps once you've changed the battery (some have 10year batteries fitted), you'll need to replace the whole alarm.
Ooh. Turn off at the mains before fiddling too. Grin

RumpledTitSkin · 11/09/2012 20:41

Sam. Sounds like you need new ones.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 11/09/2012 20:49

It always makes me twitchy when I hear about people disabling smoke detectors, we had a house fire when I was a child and it was scary how quickly it took hold. Tankfully ours was a daytime fire and found quickly, had it been night-time it could've been a very different story.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/09/2012 20:58

Don't worry Hell, the noisy one is in the hall, there is another at the top of the stairs.

It's stopped now though.Grin

Rumbled, mine have been in place for less than 2 years but yes I reckon that's true.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 11/09/2012 21:02

That's good news Dione

Sams9Goldmedals · 11/09/2012 21:05

Help, that's the beauty of mains fitted - of the electricity doesn't work the batteries still keep it working, or vice versa. Though I have now got in touch with an electrician.

We just put new ones right through our house, they were about 16 years old and the chirping every month or two was getting on my nerves, they only start chirping at about 2am and I'm home without Dh. Confused
Since replacing the lot we haven't heard a thing, we still replace the back up batteries every 6 months though.
