Do you have oil central heating? I need to ask a really stupid question

My tank in the garden in a 1000l I think and it's almost empty. If i order 1000l, will it all fit in? or do i need to order less or is there a contingency?

I have never been faced with this situation as usually I can only afford to buy 250lBlush

i told you it was a stupid question

You could order 900 litres but ask them to do a 'fill' if it will take more. I think the tankers have automatic cut off anyway, so if you ordered 1000 litres and it wouldn't fit, that wouldn't matter. You will get a cheaper price by ordering 1000 litres (there are different price band cut offs, often at 500 and 750 litres) - also play off different suppliers to get best price, or go to boilerjuice.com, or join a local oil buying syndicate.

it was boiler juice I checked and for the 1000l it's less than twice the price for 250l iykwim and it wont let me put a 900l option in. Would they put the remainder ina canister or would that be fill and leave it. Doy ou know what I mean? Confused I am confusing myself!

I'm not sure you can even get 1000 litres in a 1000l tank because you can't use the bottom 10% as it's under the pipe to the boiler iyswim.

OwlLady · 07/09/2012 10:43

oh really? I had no idea Blush so would you say 750l is a better bet?

gosh that's bizarre, i have just checked for 750l today and it was cheaper than for 500l yesterday. Does the price change daily or something

We used to have oil fired, and they just used to fill it up, and charge us for what went in.

You should get 1000l in when it's close on empty.

I play brinkmanship with our 2000l tank to get the price break.

You'll get charged for what will fit, just like filling a car. The tankers print out sort of till slips, then we get sent a bill.

Ring round the companies and talk to your neighbours, prices and service vary.

Last time I haggled and got my usual, very nice company to price match the best quoteGrin

Wanted to keep using them because they always come quickly and they even came down our hill in the snow. (The other lot weren't even answering their phone).

No oil was totally my fault, for wanting to be certain of hitting the price break and miss judging how much a rare really cold patch used.

Yes like petrol prices, heating oil prices leap about.

Generally cheaper in Summer for oblivious reasons, but prone to random blips with political unready in the Arab world or refining problems.

Interesting, but irritating, you find yourself swearing at the news.

DH has a long commute do I swear twice once for heating oil and again for petrol prices.

OwlLady · 07/09/2012 11:30

we have had it for two years, I just have never been able to afford much before now but have been putting money by for this year. I want it filled up now though as the price seems better than I topped up throughout winter last year

My local company are usually pretty competitive tbh so maybe I should ring them first and see what they say
