possible move to Hendon

Hendon ticks lots of boxes for us location-wise, mainly being able to get to see family members easily, and not being too far out of town. But I don't really know it. What are the schools like? What's going on in the area? The housing stock doesn't look great, we are in a large 3 double bed mid-Victorian terrace with a long garden, but in inner city south east London. I'm not bothered about a period property but everything I've seen in Hendon looks like a doctor's surgery (1930s house with front garden completely paved over).

I suppose what I'm asking is what the feel of it is. Where we are now is quite arty, and it's not unusual to be a slightly scruffy older mum (I'm early 40s with a toddler) - I noticed in my mum's London suburb, most mums in the park were younger and more groomed than me!

We love living so centrally (zone 2, DH walks to work in central London, or could cycle in about 20 mins) but it's really too far from family (DD likely to be a one-and-only) and schools not great.

any tips from Hendonites gratefully received!

Hi,
I'm an ex-Hendonite. It's a very convenient place to live in Zone 3, with tube and train. Close to shops (Brent X). Though high street is rubbish, imo. I didn't like Brent street either. There is a sure start centre which is great.

I didn't rate any of the secondary schools and was personally disappointed with the primary (Ofsted Good/Outstanding). There are some good private nurseries though and Hendon prep school.

Housing wise I found it a mixed bag, expensive houses (tiny gardens) and then really crap ex-la ones. Not much in between. If you have a healthy budget I'm sure you can get a nice house on a decent street.

I would go and check it out, walk around etc. visit it in the evenings too - see how you feel. Personally, I'm glad I don't live there anymore, despite it being so convenient.

Best of luck and hope you find what suits you & your family.
