Can each room be painted a different colour in a partially open plan kitchen /dining room

I would be really grateful to have your views.

I have a small late 1930s semi with the kitchen and dining room at the rear. We have recently changed our kitchen layout and have now a semi open plan kitchen and dining room.

The opening gap is at the end nearest the entry into the galley kitchen and dining room so when you walk into the kitchen you see both rooms end on instantly if that makes sense.

The kitchen has white cabinets, white tiling, beech worktops and a very small bit of light heritage green shade of paint at the side of the splashback and above cabinets. It is quite white really!

I dont think I fancy the light green in the dining room as I think the paint could look darker in the poor light - its light but quite a "solid" colour (!) and I think I want white.

Do both rooms need to be the same colour?

Thanks for your help!

no but I would avoid obviously clashing colours unless you are quite bold in the rest of your interior design. You could choose colours which go together well but are very different. If you look at the heritage colours (which may not be your thing at all) you could choose some nice greens/blues/greys/parchment colours which would stand out as distinct but wouldn't cause you a headache.

I agree it needn't be the same colour, but not obviously clashing either.

If you want a white dining room, I'd go for a more creamy heritage colour as pure white is too stark for a dining room ime. You want relaxing, lingering, type of colour.

Thanks lovely and squirted. feeling more confident now. i had intended to do both rooms green! how do you think it would look at first glance?

IMO it would look better if the long walls, that run from one room into the next, were the same colour, but you could paint the end, or non-adjacent, walls, differently.

piglet - I hadnt thought about that. more food for thought, thanks. i was thinking that rooms in two different colours could look disjointed and other times i think a lighter colour white- y shade would look ok. really had to tell esp since the decision will be glaring at me as soon as i open the kitchen/ dining room door.
