Best place to buy kitchen units?

We have a hideous kitchen. Dark ornate oak with fiddly diddly handles and some of the units are actually different. Delightful brown gas hob and oven with smoked brown glass door. All old and tatty. In our last house we had just completely redone the kitchen and it was light and bright and luverly.

But mortgage means we have no dosh so a new kitchen is out of the question. Plan is to replace some of the units completely and with the others replace the side panels where neccessary and the doors on all of them. Also need new fitted fridge and oven/hob.

Have had a look at Wickes and Howdens ... any other recommednations for cheapish place to get the above. I am finding it really hard to compare prices.

If the cupboards are oak, I would've just painted/restained them and put on new handles....

Hmmm.... I don't tjhink there is much actual 'oak' in them tbh. The side panels are plastic coated and the doors are simply dark wood of some kind. Not to mention they are also very detailed with leaded lights in them - not my taste at all. Not to mention several of the drawers have fallen apart. We did think of just trying to use what we have but it really wouldn't have worked.

I take it back - CHANGE them! They sound truly awful!

Have you looked at the various kitchen makeover companies will work with your units but change doors/side panels/worktop etc?7
I have never done this so cant recommend any but it may work out well for you.
Perhaps worth getting a few round to price up your options.
It does sound like it would be a false economy to try and work with what you have given you obviously hate it all!

nankypeevy · 10/09/2012 17:19

skandi have you bought a second hand kitchen, then?

Must say, I am surprisingly interested - there's a couple on there that would fit our space, that I really like and are way more interesting than the Howden's brochure...

There has to be a catch?

culturemulcher · 10/09/2012 17:35

Just reporting back now our new kitchen's in and finished. It's gorgeous! Better quality and better looking than the ones I looked at in b&q and wickes for less money. Grin

Arizonian would absolutely recommend annalouise's dh. He did the kitchen I just mentioned. Feel free to pm me if you'd like any info. He's so good he should be the mn kitchen designer. [Smile]

Amazonianwoman that should have said 'I'd definitely recommend' silly phone.

Pannacotta · 10/09/2012 18:13

amazonian we are also not much further along though I have a much better idea of what I want.
Good luck with your project, have a feeling yours is like ours in that there is quite of bit of building work to be done first, which in our case has made it a tricky project to get off the ground.

culturemulcher would it be ok if I pm you re your kitchen? Am looking at suppliers and am undecided as yet...

culturemulcher · 10/09/2012 18:45

panacotta of course. Putting the DC to bed now, but I'm sure I'll be back MNing later ;-)

culturemulcher · 10/09/2012 18:45

Or even Wink. What's wrong with this phone?

Yorky · 10/09/2012 20:51

Thank you for the recommendation Culture, I am a little bit in love with the designs/pictures he has sent me and am impressed with the quote. Its very nice to hear the quality is as good as the design :)

culturemulcher · 10/09/2012 21:07

Yorky, I was too! I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about buying online when I hadn't met Paul, but after speaking to a couple of his previous clients who all sounded a) genuine and b) sane, I took the plunge. So, so glad I did.

The quality is very good and because he'll make bespoke cupboards (for no extra cost that I could see), we managed to get a kitchen that fitted exactly - non of the designers at Wickes, B&Q, Homebase or Ikea managed to get a design to fit the kitchen exactly as they work to standard unit sizes.

I'm gabbling a bit, but really, it's worked out so, so well.

Pannacotta · 10/09/2012 22:10

Thanks very much for your message culture, great to hear that it all worked out so well.
We also need bespoke as our kitchen is an odd shape so will get in touch with him. Thanks again.
Good luck in your search Orm...

amazonianwoman · 10/09/2012 22:30
