Central heating not coming on but still getting hot water?

I thought it was a bit chillier today so decided to put the heating on for the 1st time in months. Nothing. Checked the hot water - still running in both the bathroom and kitchen. None of the radiators have got a bit of heat in them at all. Can't tell if it's the control switch, the radiators or the boiler. The only thing that made the boiler make it's usual 'groan' when starting up was to press the eco button off then on again, but still no heat in the radiators. The boiler is a worcester, and has a small green light flashing above the override button. Can't find anything in the manual that tells me what that means, if anything. The light could have been flashing before this happened, I've just never noticed it before.

Any ideas? It's due a service soon, now I'm worried it's going to cost me a fortune 'cos something is broke.

I have a Main Combi 24 HE boiler. The hot water is working fine but the central heating doesn't work. What could be the problem, anyone any ideas?

PigletJohn · 03/11/2014 18:06

examine the settings on the timer/programmer. It might have a light or indicator to show when the heating should be on.

Listen to the room stat on the wall. If it has a rotating knob, it may click as you change the setting above/below current room temperature.

Turn off the heating at the timer and the wall stat. Let it cool down for half an hour. Then turn them on. Do you hear the boiler lighting for a short time? Is there a faint hum?

Are all the radiators completely cold? Were they turned off for the summer?

Hello I just read this thread as I was having the same problem this morning and it also turned out to be new batteries in our thermostat (wall one...although ours is portable) so thanks to those of you who suggested that. Anyone having this problem may want to try it before calling engineers!!! Xmas Grin

Hi all, I have an old boiler (15 years or so) and we've just come back from Bulgaria and we have heating but no hot water. No immediate issues visable apart from the thermostat simply not triggering the heating. We have a digital wall thermostat with a small screen which is operating normally. After checking the boiler its self the pressure has dropped dramatically. I increased the pressure by turning the black tap just underneath until it raised to about 1.5. ... Still nothing, hot water but no heating.
After reading this thread i thought I'd change the batteries in the wall thermostat for the sake of it, problem solved. Normally when the thermostat batteries are low there is a flashing light but not this time, I believe the batteries were just of poor quality causing the issue. I hope this can help any of you with a similar issue as it prevented a call out for an engineer all for the sake of 2 double A batteries.
Kind regards
Ed

A Worcester greenstar junior requires the pump to work for heating and hot water. Defo sounds like a control problem. As previous people have stayed, check that the batteries have not gone flat in the room stat. If the recover looses the radio signal the heating will not come on.

Put your motorised valve onto manual mode. It is a silver cube like object over the pipes. On the back, there should be a little slider.

Hi, I have the same problem. We have hot water but no heating. The battery was low in the wireless room start. We had replaced it and still is not working. I forgot to do annual boiler service, boiler is 3 years old, this year and it looks that it got broken :( do you have any ideas?

PigletJohn · 21/01/2015 16:10

If you have a wireless room stat, it may have lost contact with the receiver on the boiler when the battery went flat. Have a look at the instructions for how to re-pair them.

I am not fond of wireless stats as they have these additional points of potential failure.

I'm having this issue!
We've not long had the heating engineer out to completely fix the boiler as well...Angry

MissPoppins · 01/02/2015 12:34

Having this problem now, got hot water, but no heating, will try changing the batteries in the heating control, its bloomin freezing!!

MissPoppins · 01/02/2015 12:40

The batteries worked! Amazing, thanks so much xxx

We have a Worcester combi boiler less than 12 months old and the heating packed up on a very cold Sunday afternoon. Strangely we still had hot water. Found the advice on your website about changing the heating control batteries and it worked! I'd never have thought of that as the display still worked. Thanks so much!!

We have problem with our heating system too. The water is getting hot but heating does not come on. If we put the heating on at the same time as water, it stays on for about 40 minutes and then the boiler stops firing. We have Glow Worm 330 Condensed boiler. It was installed about 7 years ago by British Gas. We contacted British Gas for a quotation but they want credit card number up front before they book an engineer. A couple of local heating engineers promised to look at the problem but never showed up. It has been freezing in the house. Can anyone please suggest a solution?

PigletJohn · 10/02/2015 21:13

have you got a hot water cylinder?

Is the tapwater unusually hot?

When was it last serviced?

mohinderdosanjh2002 · 10/02/2015 21:20

Do you mean hot water tank? Yes we have.
Water does get really really hot.
The boiler was serviced over 5 years ago.

PigletJohn · 10/02/2015 21:39

I think your 3-port valve may be faulty.

Unless you are very fond of plumbing, get a mender in.

At this time of year all heating engineers will be very busy with their regular customers.

BG may do a fixed-price repair, which can be good value.

If they tell you that you need a powerflush at £hundreds, report back but don't accept it..

mohinderdosanjh2002 · 10/02/2015 21:47

My other half also thinks that possibly faulty 3-port valve.
Fixed price repair sounds good. We will definitely talk to BG.
Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

My Worcester 24Ri Boiler (not combi) is not igniting either but the Blue light stays on but the Green light (looks like a little flame) is flashing on now and then when the boiler is trying to ignight. It does this 3x fails every time then switches of.
I phoned Worcester and they said because my Blue light isn't flashing that this shoes that there is no fault with the boiler and think it may be to do with the water tank in the loft? The switches are on for the cylinder tank in the airing cupboard in bathroom so we have hot water. Can anyone help

This happened to me, water was fine but radiators weren't coming on. Was a problem with the wireless signal from the thermostat. Changed the batteries on the control in the hall and bingo! Even though it looked fine, and the battery symbol wasn't on. Also top tip - Use good quality batteries. The first ones I tried, Panasonic everyday ones, didn't do the trick but Duracell UltraPower worked.

Ad1966 · 07/04/2017 16:25

This happened to my boiler , I put new batteries in thermostat in the hall and it all works fine again now

Hi good people I need with the problem, I have just over 5 years old combi boiler. It developed an issue all of a sudden after coming back in 2 days holiday. im having hot water and no heating. The pressure and boiler itself seems to be fine except it cuts itsself once the itd reaches rhe highest temp with no heating coming up on the radiator.. ive check the thermostat on the hallway and no evidence of battery attached ..its looked like its mine was electric powered I.ive had few engineers in to check and they all sayinh different thing. One said it is the valve stwich between hot water and the heating that needs replacing and another one then came up with a faulty boiler pump. I am so confused with any of these engineers as i dont want to spend to fix it and then at the end i would be told ..i need to replace something else. The engineer that mentioned faulty is saying this can be repaired without replacing it but no gurrantee for £95. He then stated that brand new will cost me £300. Im confused with all these options. I need the heating back on as i am expecting a new born baby in few weeks time

What does blue light on comi boiler indicate?

Kidssendingmenuts · 30/08/2018 15:22

Stupid question but can you hear the water going to the radiators when you switch it on? Maybe if you haven't used it in a while air may be trapped in them and they just need the air leaking out with the radiator valve key? I have one radiator that does this and I keep having to bleed it x
