Hi, DP and I may have to relocate to Mcr and we are really interested in moving to Chorlton. We know Mcr well and the suburb pretty well. This is a question about some of the streets, reasons for different house prices and whether there are any important things we are missing. We have looked at the area around Corkland Rd (Totnes, Devonshire Road etc) and really like it. We have also looked at Beechwood Ave and a couple of other streets off Sandy Lane right next to Chorlton Park; we like them too.
Does anyone know anything about any of these areas, please? In particular, are any more popular with renters (no disrespect to tenants at all, but DP has pulled his hair out about the shark landlords buying up property round by us, putting 'young professionals' in and then letting the houses decay). Also, are we missing some obvious reason why the streets near Chorlton Park are MUCH cheaper than round Corkland? There isn't that much difference with space, so I'm worried we're missing something. Finally, we are really boring people who like peace and quiet when we are at home (we love Beech Rd shops and bars, but we're deliberately looking to live a little bit away from there) so any local gen re. secret nightclubs in Devonshire Road, whether these streets get v. busy at the weekend wd be great. Thank you.

My mum just moved from Devonshire Rd! Very quiet nice family streets off Corkland Rd although obv the metro runs down the end now. No secret nightclubs Grin. The odd bit of ASB and dog poo in the alley along the end but good bike/pushchair access to metro and Morrison's.

Obv Chorlton Park end just further away from centre of Chorlton, closer to Oakwood High and Mauldeth Rd, which is probably the bit people think of as less 'posh'. Traffic pretty crowded nr park as parking either side and speed bumps slow everyone down. Don't know more about those little cul-de-sacs near park but expect there's just a bit more 'yoof' cycling around and potential for issues that you always get with yoof in parks! Grin

Corkland Rd area still has some multi-occupancy houses AFAIK but much much less than 10-20 years ago when it was mostly students, since desirable family homes there have priced people out of it. Other side of Wilbraham Rd has some nice roads - Chandos etc...

Also try little enclaves up on border of Chorlton/Stretford, around Longford Park, where you can find some nice semi-detached Edwardian houses for less than in Chorlton central. Do bear in mind school catchment areas as Chorlton schools are VERY competitive and boundaries are policed very stringently...

I'm sure someone who actually lives there now will come along and contradict me, but it's where I grew up so still feels like home!

Thanks, this is really useful! Not bothered about schools, as long as they teach the kids to ride bike on pavement while simultaneously smoking spliff and talking into mobile phone, which as you suggest seems to be essential part of yoof life these days...this is just great WilfSell, really informative about that part of Chorlton and good news from my point of view. Know what you mean re. Stretford/Longford Park, but we've decided that if we do move to Mcr we'll want to be near the centre of Chorlton - DP works abroad a bit, gets home absolutely shattered, so wants to be near the centre of the action when he is at home.
