Clunch crunch?

Does anyone live in a house made of clunch? How expensive is the maintenance? Is it damp? Should buying a clunch cottage be avoided?

You could try emailing these people here and asking them!

Call the SPAB technical helpline. It is free and they will give you the lowdown.

Have been in a few but never owned one.

I'm told that, like a Cob house, the most important things are "a good hat and a good pair of shoes."

i.e. a good roof and gutters to keep the rain off, and protection round the base to prevent rain splash wetting the base. They used to paint a plinth with tar round here (coastal area).

Most old houses are well-ventilated with draughty doors and windows and open fireplaces, and are liable to get damp if you seal them up with plastic windows, especially if you add extra moisture from steamy showers or wet washing draped around. Any building work must be done in sympathetic, breathing materials (no cement, waterproof paint, or vinyl wallpaper).

The walls will probably be too soft to screw heavy curtain rails or wall cupboards to.
