Loft conversion in a maisonette

I live with my two DS in a first floor 2 bed maisonette. It can be quite cramped , I will definitely need more space as my older son moves into his teens. I am considering a loft conversion . Has anyone done this in a maisonette. ?

You will need to look at your lease terms to see if it's allowed and whether you have to make an application to the management co or freeholder to change the use. Also, lift conversions are subject to a lot of building regs - sometimes it really is cheaper (and easier!) to move.

We were turned down for a loft conversion in our upstairs maisonette because to make a loft legally 'habitable' you need to reinforce the ground floor and have fire doors throughout upstairs and downstairs and we didn't have permission to touch downstairs. Instead we got a new loft hatch, boarded the loft and put a velux window in for a light storage room for just less than £2k

I did - no problems with reinforcing downstairs. We own freehold for the building which meant there was no shilly shallying with a landlord but, even if you have to buy the loft space or whatever, it'll probably still be cheaper than moving.

Noisytoys , were you turned down by the freeholder or were you able to get council planning permission ?

I was turned down by the free holder. They did show us paperwork from the last leaseholder where they were turned down by the planning dept
