Just want to gloat and celebrate the end of life with my hideous gloomy rustic oak cave-kitchen that DH forced us to have by turning his nose up at every single white/cream kitchen in the entire universe

After living in stygian gloom for 3 years and needing the lights on even in mid-afternoon in summer he has now admitted defeat and we are getting the cabinets painted, starting today.

Slightly scared the finish won't look too good, or will chip all the time, or having wooden insides will look stupid, but v excited. Fed up with having this stupid expensive kitchen that cost a fortune, and that we spend so much time in, but I LOATHE.

Anyone else got stories of expensive mistakes/disagreements?

What paint are using? I hear Annie Sloan is the best for painting wood

Dont make the mistake of using any old thing like we did! It chips off.

Congrats btw. Im dreaming of the day we can rip our kitchen out!!

Dulux water based Diamond thingy. Some people have said waterbased more prone to chipping as less elastic than oil based, but the guys who are doing it we've worked with for years and trust, so we're going with what they think best. I'm also heartily sick of all our existing oil based paint yellowing and would never touch the stuff again given a choice. As far as I can establish, it's going to be a bit prone to chipping no matter what we do because we're starting off with lacquered wood.

Undercoat is zinsser bin primer that apparently sticks to anything.

I also want to do this, but I am scared of making a mess of the wood, and I am useless choosing colour. What colour have you chosen? Keep us posted on your progress!

We have off-white walls (dulux jasmine white) chosen after getting through about 5647 tester pots of every off white paint in production at the time and had seen quite a few examples in interior mags where people had painted kitchen cabinets and walls in same colour, so we're having them painted in the same off-white. It's not the most exciting or fashionable colour but it works with everything.

We considered pure white but wasn't sure about that against off white walls, and the floor and worktop are both black and wanted to avoid it looking too harsh black/white. Also considered a more creamy colour but wanted it as pale as poss and were nervous enough about it without choosing a new colour.

What colours have you got in your room greyvix, and what kind of colour would you want for cabinets?

Will keep you updated (although suspect the real test will be a year or so down the line when it's had a bit of wear)!
