Bathroom design ideas

Has anyone got any recommendations of places to look for inspiration for small bathrooms? Googling just seems to get me lots of bathrooms that are not what I would call small.

Our bathroom (1.7m x 2.1m but with awkward door and window position) needs updating but I'm struggling for options.

Cheers

Pinterest?

Looking for layout ideas rather than colours at the moment, i think pinterest is great for the latter, not so much the former

What Channel 4 have to say on the matter Grin

Our bath is 1.7m long - guess how wide our bathroom is!

spoonsspoonsspoons · 28/08/2012 19:45

Looking around, our main issue is not so much the size of the room but the position of doors and windows. 1.7 m is perfect bath length, but unfortunately the door is on the 2.1m wall which means there's 55 cm one side and 70 cm the other, so has to be a narrow bath. A bath wider at one end than the other would work, except for the fact the window is at the other end which means the shower would have to be at the narrow end - argh.

Seriously considering knocking on neighbours doors to see what they've done with their bathrooms Grin

Noseying at the neighbours sounds like a good plan!

Is moving the door an option?

spoonsspoonsspoons · 28/08/2012 20:26

We could potentially move the door so we'd have something closer to a metre on one side. The wall with the door isn't a supporting wall but is brick so would be a reasonable amount of work. Equally we could alter the size of the window opposite which would give us full wall height for a shower. Really wanted to avoid major building work though.

I think design has an incredible effect on how large a room appears.

Actually, our shower room is absurdly tiny and dark. When you look at it, it feels spacious, light and glossy. I think this is all down to good design on the part of our brilliant bathroom designer.

So some of the rooms you're looking at may actually be larger than you think.

However, if it helps, our small bathroom is about 1.7m x 2m. The bath is on the left as you go through the door and measures 1.7m. The basin is on your right, and the loo is also on the right, past the basin. Storage space has been cunningly built into the wall, so that shampoos and so on have a niche, and spare towels and loo roles have a hidden cupboard. We had to pick a special narrow towel rail to fit in the space available, but it works.

The layout used to be completely different - the bath was sort of in front of you, with a random useless space beside it where we put the laundry basket, and the loo was on the left and the basin was on the right. Climbing out of the bath, you had to sort of climb past the loo to get dressed. It was probably the worst layout possible.

GrendelsMum · 28/08/2012 20:29

Ph yes, we did move a door, but it's all plasterboard rather than brick, so it took a couple of days.

WheresVinick · 28/08/2012 20:37

Watching with interest! spoons - the bathroom in our last place was small (and badly laid out) and we really wish we had done the building work it needed (in our case, shifting the boiler out over the stairs). We couldn't face it so we moved instead!

GrendelsMum - brilliant bathroom designer, you say... Where would one look for one of those...? We're currently trying to turn one bathroom plus corridor into a bathroom plus ensuite and could do with some professional help! Even moving house hasn't saved us from bathroom design issues...

spoonsspoonsspoons · 28/08/2012 20:49

We don't need a huge amount of storage, we have a huge airing cupboard (no tank anymore) on the landing with loads of space for spare toilet rolls, towels etc. I've seen some great designs in rooms smaller than what we have to work with, they seem to have less limitations in terms of doors/windows though.

My main aim was to have a decent shower, over the bath is fine but I wanted a bath that would function well as a shower too, i.e. nice flat end, but it seems we don't have the room which frustrates me because I know people with smaller bathrooms who manage it!

Oh, believe me, we had the most absurd limitations on layout! The plumbers had to come and check twice before the final design was agreed.

Have you spoken to a bathroom designer, Spoons?

spoonsspoonsspoons · 28/08/2012 21:00

No, not yet. Only just started thinking about the bathroom now that we've just about recovered from doing the kitchen Grin

We actually have our shower right up against a window, the window has a waterproof finish and we keep a sqeegie thing in there to use for cleaning after showering (we need it anyway because of the shower box). Would that be possible for you?

GoingforGoingforGOLD · 28/08/2012 21:10

What covering do you have over your window?

We've also got sn awkward bathroom and the only place that found accommodate a shower is beside a window, but I'm concerned about scaring flashing the neighbours

We had layout problems with our bathroom, very narrow with only one position the bath could possibly go in.

The window at the end of the bath meant the shower couldn't go at the end of the bath so we positioned it in the middle of the bath and found a double sided shower screen, this actually works really well as the shower screen can be folded back towards the wall when not in use making our tiny bathroom feel not so tiny!

Hope this link works!
