Glass panels above internal doors

I have glass panels above the interior doors in my house- however the previous owner has painted over 2 of them, half painted over one and glossed over another.

The 2 that haven't been touched actually look awful as well as the glass is grooved and where the door frames have been glossed the gloss has seeped into the ridges.

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas of what we could do with them, apart from replacing with plain glass which seems the obvious answer. My house is a 1970's 3 bed semi so not terribly modern but I'm not sure fancy stained glass would suit. To be honest though I have never seen anything other than plain glass in other homes.

I'm hoping one of you property experts will know of some other options! Thanks

PLain glass and then stick on frosting?

Or if you're replacing the glass anyway you could just fit frosted glass. (But I think it's much more expensive which is why the stick-on frosting is good!)

Replace with tongue and groove paneling and paint white if your woodwork is while. We did this in a house we renovated and it looks well

I got some plasterboard and fixed it to both sides of the frame so it just looks like wall rather than glass window above the door. Kept the glass in place but now sandwiched between plasterboard.

Not a fan of glass above doors.

They are called transomes or fanlights, they are there to 'borrow light' either into the room or into the hallway/landing. They are useful for young children as a 'nightlight' as you are able to close the bedroom door but leave the landing light on, also you can see if there is a light on in the bedroom of an older child (have they fallen asleep with the light on or are they still reading/on computer when should be asleep?).

You could check out the textured clear glass that is available. You will be amazed at the clear glass that has beautiful designs. The designs range from ripples, swirls, wavy and so many others. Should not be too expensive to have cut to size at a glaziers.

You could also just get plain glass and etch a design in the glass. A craft store will have etching acid cream. You can use a stencil or mask off a simple design, a geometric pattern. You just apply the etching acid to the glass, wait a few minutes, wash it off and then install it. Or use sticky-backed frosting which can also be cut into with a craft knife to form a geometric pattern.

If I get a chance I will be round in the house we did on Monday, I'll take a photo of it

We have exactly same issues. Both glass panels for shower room and kitchen been painted over. Seems they painted over everything. Even plug sockets. I read vinegar and terps mixed can get it off. Had No idea was glass under it till hubby checked n said. I think is glass under there. Did a little scrap and there is..
