self-cleaning ovens, do I want pyrolitic or catalytic?

I'm starting to look at cookers for our Great Kitchen Refurb and do want a self-cleaning oven. But what's the difference between the two kinds and - most importantly - which works best? I don't have a clue. But I''m happy to pay more for something that really works because I'm a lazy slattern who never cleans the oven cooking a lot.

Sorry not sure of the difference - but i had one that was pyrolitic and it was brilliant.

Mine is pyrolitic and works brilliantly. It smokes out the kitchen though, so I try to do it overnight. I don't know about the other type.
You do need to clean shelves etc separately, but you can do these in the dishwasher.

Mum had a catalytic one for 20 yrs and all you have to do is clean the bottom with a quick wipe (no oven cleaners allowed near it!) and the glass door, again a quick wipe over every so often.

I have just got a new oven (AEG) and plumped for catalytic as with the pyrolytic ones you have to put it on a cleaning cycle and can't use oven during this time. Friend has pyrolytic one and it has stopped working...

With the catalytic ones you do nothing! Grin and just dust off the fine ash from the sides.

Also make sure that the model you buy has the catalytic liners at the back as well otherwise you will have to clean it yourself.

That sounds good, thank you. But part of the reason I'm asking is that I also want an induction hob and induction + pyrolitic means that I am getting a Smeg cooker and that is that. Maybe that's easier than actually having to choose. Are there any catalytic oven owners out there?

Pyrolitic are the better cleaning oven out the two.

heres a link of the differences, explaining what they all do

Hi. I have an induction hob and pyrolytic oven - both from ikea. Both been great.

Loved my old pyrolitic but current one less effective, still does a better job than me I suppose.

My mum had a catalytic one for years on her old hob. It is a passive system so you clean as you use it for cooking in a weird way!

I have a pyrolitic one and as others have said it needs its own cycle. It does smoke. It uses extra power. It doesnt really tackle the door well. I try to put it on after ive been cooking so it doesnt have to heat from cold.

If i had the choice again id probably go catalytic but a self cleaning oven is pretty good whatever its faults!
