We have just had a new bathroom put in. We want to put a new heater in there and extractor fan. The heater will be a wall mounted convector heater.

My Dad is a retired builder and is more than capable of putting these in but i'm sure i remember the person we bought our house from saying they needed a reg electrician to put the electric shower in and i wonder is it the same 'rules' for a fan and heater? And who is going to be checking this? Confused by all the rules.

Anyone know?

Electrical work in Bathrooms (also kitchens, saunas, hot-tubs and swimming pools) is notifiable under Building Regulations. The expensive way to do it is to apply to your local council and pay their fees, the cheaper and simpler way is to engage an electrician who is a member of a Competent Persons Scheme who is authorised to make out a certificate and send in the notification.

Try to get recommendations for a local electrician, and ask which Scheme he is in and how long he has been a member before asking him to come round. You can can check him on his scheme's website.
