Redirected Mail

Today at my home address, I was sent post addressed to my rental house.

Last tenant was a nightmare, disappeared off into the sunset the day the of the court bailiffs, never to be seen again.

House had to be (pretty much) re built and is now empty waiting for new tenant. I have post going there - just utility bills, but in my name at that address.

The post that arrived at my house today had been addressed correctly, but has been crossed out and my home address written on, by I think the last tenant. It looks like her writing, and the only explination I can think of, is that she has had her post redirected and royal mail have sent my post to her new address.

So I rang royal mail, and they said that just wouldn't happen. But it has. Now I'm confused, and while there is nothing confidential, I don't want my post going Lord knows where.

Any idea what I can do about this?

Also, when you have not paid rent, trashed a house and dragged out an eviction for 18 months, why would you go to lengths to dig out my address and forward on the post???? Worlds gone mad.

Very odd but I do know that royal mail redirection is based on surname and when setting up the redirection, each surname is charged for separately. Could it have been wrongly delivered to a neighbour?

No one would know my home address, that is what confuses me. The last tenant did, it would have been among the contract/contact details.

Our names are very different too, so not an easy mistake.

It is a terraced house so I would think if it went to a neighbours they would just pop it back in the right door, only a few houses.

Confused

And no one but me has keys, locks were changed when she left.

Did the Royal Mail people confirm that there was a redirection request for your rented property? They are meant to send a letter to the original address to confirm that they have received a redirection request (to prevent fraud) but I take it you haven't seen one? It's possible the tenant set it up before they did a runner, though.

Redirection is meant to be by surname (I had to pay twice because DCs have a different surname from me) but it is not unknown for the post office sorting people to slip up and just bung everything for the address in the redirection pile.

If you're lucky it won't happen again, and just be grateful that the ex-tenant obviously forwarded it.

Are you still trying to track her down? Unfortunately the post office probably isn't meant to let you know what address any post is being forwarded to, but it might be worth a try...

They didn't confirm it exactly, they just said that if a re direct is in place then it is just for the named person and they wouldn't send any other names on.

Her DS did have a different name so perhaps if she has a few names redirected mine was a mistake. Not sure how much mail has/hasn't gone to her. I have been getting some, the water bill still comes!

And yes I am still trying to track her down, I had thought I might try and do some digging with RM, but not really sure how to broach it.....

And she was still getting post for a few weeks/couple of months after she left, it slowley dwindled and stopped about a month or so ago. No confirmation of redirection that I know about.

Redirection is definitely not foolproof. Some letters addressed to us at our last rental property have been wrongly delivered to our ex-landlady (who is also the immediate neighbour to our ex-rental) and she herself has forwarded them on to us at our new place. Likewise there are things I know have been sent (to our old address) but that have failed to be redirected here to our new house so presumably are sitting in our (empy) old house or are lost in the ether somewhere.

Royal Mail these days is totally pants, so unreliable :(
