Hall, Stairs and landing....

For some strange reason I picked yesterday (in the humid horrid heat) to strip the wallpaper from the hall, stairs and landing...
It was awful 1980s anaglypta that had been painted about 4 times...think it's been up about 20 years ish.
It's the only bit Of the house we haven't done yet.
My Issue is what to do about flooring....the carpet is also very old and stamped in placed even though we have had it professionally cleaned.
We don't have any much money so need to do this in a budget.
We have a small hall area, the stairs and a small landing.
I would really like to sand and varnish/stain the stairs and use a runner but am not sure if buy can buy runners??
It needs to be hard wearing and neutral....any ideas/tips?
Tia

Did just this. It's a v fiddly job but you can get good results. We varnished the steps and painted the back of the steps white.
Lessons learned:
Sand, fill, sand then fill, sand some more. Fill all the little holes from the carpet grippers - they look terrible once you have varnished/painted the stairs.
It's noisy - if you have small DC or plan to, abandon the idea and save for replacement carpet. Even if you creep around in your socks, the little sods wake up at every creak in the stairs. Look for off cuts of carpet, you don't need tons of it just one big piece that you can cut into strips?
Once you have it looking the way you want, apply about 14 coats of clear quickdry varnish. Varnish your way up the stairs to bed every night :)
Trust me, you will not want to redo this anytime soon. We did 4/5 coats and the stairs wore out much faster than anywhere else. Plus husbands size 9's constantly scuffed (in black) the back of the steps where it was nice and white and could show it all up nicely.
Just before we moved, I saw a house feature in a newspaper. The owners had bought a series of hallway runners at Ikea, stitched them together in some way and turned them into a stairway runner. It looked really good.

We've been in the process of doing this since last October...it's time consuming!!

We cheated and painted the stairs white and had neutral striped runner fitted. The carpet was really cheap off ebay, but we put down good quality underlay figuring we could easily replace the carpet. In the hall and landing we had runners cut and the edges finished and just laid them as rugs. I got lots of compliments on it!
