I would like a grey wall

up the stairs, with family photos in plain white frames.

What do you think? Other walls cream, ceiling white. There are no windows on the landing, so would it be too dark?
I am thinking white stair rail too? It's plain wood at the moment.

The stair carpet is tatty and will need replacing but can't afford it just yet. What colour?
We'll be putting in an oak engineered floor in the hall downstairs...

Oh wise mners, please help! :)

I think it would look great, but you need to be careful with the shade of grey as some are blue based and some more brownish. Don't be afraid to choose a mid to dark grey, it won't make the room look darker, it will make the other walls and stair rail look lighter.

I think red looks fantastic with grey, so I'd go for a rich ruby coloured carpet. If you're not keen on red, then olive green or teal would work well too.

I'm glad you say that about the red! We have a deep red curtain over the door in the hall.

How do I know if it is a blue or a brown grey? I am thinking brown would be better, to complement the wood floor?

I like grey walls but they are a bit everywhere at the moment aren't they?

noddyholder · 19/08/2012 13:38

I agree with rhubarb it is a bit dated now but if you love it it does look smart.

pookamoo · 22/08/2012 12:46

Oh :( I only thought of it because there are grey bits in the pattern on the hall curtains! I haven't seen one anywhere.

I grew up in a house where all the walls and ceilings were white, I haven't got a clue about what goes together with what or what is dated or not.... my parents were woodchip and trade white emulsion people!

I like the idea of grey and white rather than cream,Trade white emulsion is great by the way and I am very into interiors

IvanaNap · 22/08/2012 12:59

It could be a nightmare to choose, I hear there's 50 odd shades of the stuff Hmm

childish; couldn't help myself

noddyholder · 22/08/2012 13:03

Trade white here too and am also interior designer

I can go with white rather than cream, but would it not be a bit harsh with a wood (oak) floor? I was kind of thinking off white rather than creamy cream...

Chalky white looks good - not as harsh as brilliant white but would work better than cream. Have a look at Farrow and Ball as their colours usually look quite classy then match as closely as possible with cheaper trade paint!

The key to making dark colours work well is the lighting. Simply changing a lightbulb to brighter, more diffused, dichroic, warmer, cooler, coloured etc. can make a huge difference!

Cornforth White is a very nice grey colour
