Places to live lincs coast

tinycassie · 18/08/2012 09:47

We are possibly needing to reloacte to the Lincs coast in the near future for work.

We would want a cottage / charecter style property in a small village with corner shop/ pub / village green - basicaly a very small community village, that has no outside interest to anyone aside from those that live there. Ideally we want this as close to the coast as is possible within 1hr from Caistor. AND DEFFFINALTY NOT TOURISTY!!!!!!
Any ideas?

Thanks :)

I think that's a tall order - because of the geography of Lincs coast you just aint going to get anywhere by the sea that's not touristy. It's nature reserves & bombing range between Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe and tourist hot spots all the way round to the Fens.
You may need to rethink and search inland

tinycassie · 18/08/2012 19:51

any suggestions for inland but as close to coast as possible? ideally this is the forever home and last move, so location is everything.

Are you anywhere near Lincolnshire now? If you don't know the area I would definately suggest booking a weekend and coming for a drive round. Some places are very isolated, there are very few big towns. Also places may look near on a map but due to the nature of the roads they may take an age to get to - roads tend to be smaller and not very good for overtaking.
If you have children I would suggest looking at schools first and using that as a starting point. Bear in mind there is a grammar school system in the county in some areas, which sometimes means that the local Secondary is not up to scratch.
We are an intensley agricultural county which also makes a difference to the type of villages we have
Having said all that I love Lincolnshire and will never move but am aware that once here some people can find it very 'odd'. Large parts of it really feel like time stopped in 1953!! We spent ages looking for the right community, renting before we settled 2 miles South of 'The City' ( Lincoln, the only one!)

MrsPnut · 18/08/2012 20:42

I agree with Nickiminja, large swathes of Lincolnshire are what we call "give me 6" territory.

There can a big suspicion of incomers and every place will be different. You are much better off renting if you don't know the area at all.

We rented to begin with here in two different houses, one in the north of Lincoln and then again in a village a few miles south before buying a house in a village 5 miles south of Lincoln because it was only a 5 minutes commute by bike for OH to work.

tinycassie · 18/08/2012 21:28

Thanks.

No I dont know lincs at all. My daughter id finishing her gcse's at present and wants to study vet nursing so will need an argricultural or other college of some decription reasonably close. we just want to be near the coast but i loath and hate the idea of tourists ruining my weekends at home, traffic, battling for parking. Think id rather live in london!

lanes and fields is a plus in my book as i have several horses that will also need a new home :)

Lincolnshire is a lovely county (I was born and bred there) but it's also a large, quiet and thinly populated one. It is a bit like the land that time forgot! TBH the coast is the most touristy place but some main roads will suffer from traffic or caravans at certain times of the year, and tractors at others, e.g the A158 from Lincoln to Skegness is notorious. I don't imagine there's anywhere else that gets enough tourists to impact on parking - there's plenty of space Smile.

Lanes and fields are everywhere, hard to avoid them!

Why do you need to be near Caistor, is that for work? I would try to be as near as possible, there are lovely villages in the Wolds and it's not too far from the coast. Better chance of getting to know people if you are near work or a slightly bigger place.

I would suggest coming up for a long weekend, stay in a B&B in Louth or Caistor, chat up the estate agents and drive round everywhere and look at villages. Character houses will be fairly sparse so you would be better to draw an area and be flexible within it.

There is an agricultural college at Riseholme just north of Lincoln, maybe that does a suitable course?

VivaLeBeaver · 18/08/2012 22:26

The tourists go to skeg, ingoldmells, cleethorpes, mablethorpe.

They all drive in on the coast road from Lincoln. The main skeg to Lincoln rd.

There are plenty of other nice beaches that people don't tend to go to. With back roads to get there. You can bypass the traffic no problem.

Tealby is nice.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/08/2012 22:28

And if your dd can't drive remember that public transport can be rubbish. Many villages have no bus service at all.

tinycassie · 19/08/2012 21:35

Yep Caistor is for work.

Oh where are these hidden beach gems? Please tell me, I promiss i wont tell anyone else!

In regards to transport, im the local free taxi service! she'll have to get a scooter for college i guess.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, i'll be up later in the week to do some nosing about. keep suggestions coming :)

Places like Wolla Bank, Mogs Eye, Anderby Creek.

The roads from Caistor direction to Lincoln/Riseholme college are terrible. Only 2 options really and both are main A roads, red routes with more accidents and fatalities than I care to think about. Market Rasen has a train station with trains and regular buses, might be worth considering.

tinycassie · 19/08/2012 21:57

If she was to go to Riseholm, we'd have to be within 40 mins from here towards the north and east of lincs. Area covering: Kirton Linsey, Caistor, Market Rasen, Wragby.

Anyone know of any lovely villages which would be this area approx?
I suppose I also need to ask about night life for her.

tinycassie · 19/08/2012 21:58

Oh i want to live at Wolla Bank or Mogs Eye, fab place names:)

VivaLeBeaver · 19/08/2012 22:07

There's no houses/village at Wolla Bank or Mogs Eye. Just deserted beaches. No facilities, you have to wee in the sea!

Wandastartup · 19/08/2012 23:31

Glentham, hackthorn, hemswell all nice.

spoonsspoonsspoons · 20/08/2012 10:13

I grew up in that area, snitterby, redbourne, waddingham, cadney, north kelsey might be worth looking at.

spoonsspoonsspoons · 20/08/2012 10:27

And wolds is nicer than the coast imo

fossil97 · 20/08/2012 13:35

From Caistor, Grimsby might be a better option for studying than Lincoln. (presumably this is only for a few years). Is it a forever job as well as a forever home? Grin

I'd think twice about a long daily journey, it's one thing when you are struggling into a city through places you might never want to live, but there are lots of nice villages in the north of the Wolds. Lincolnshire is not somewhere you cover distance fast and why waste fuel/hours every day? (I have a 50 mile round trip to work and I'm not sure why it seemed like a good idea when we bought the house).

Night life? Grin Possibly Sheffield?

We’re looking to move to near Louth. I realise this thread is now 7 years old! Tinycassie - where did you decide to live? Hope it’s as lovely as you wanted 😊

Weise79 · 27/10/2019 06:06

Hi,

There are lots of the small villages around Grimsby I’d defiantly head south for an option fitting the criteria. North or South Summercotes is on the coast and has the village shop. There is a beautiful Market town called Louth with is amazing and within 30 mins of Grimsby. I hope this information helps, good luck.
