What is the best flooring for kitchen and bathroom?

Our kitchen and bathroom are right next to each other and when we refurb them we will need new flooring. Ideally the same in each room. But what is best for these rooms?

I like the idea of cushion floor - we have a baby so safer (imo) and warmer. However DH wants tile. Im conscious that tiles may be cold and slippery and we will smash something on them.

What do you have and do you like it?

It's not popular but I like cork. It's warm under foot and quite durable if you choose finish right.

We have vinyl in kitchen and hallway and I really regret it. Marks and dents easily. Admittedly it was a cheap option but I wish we'd had boards.

Boards like floor boards? We have the original floorboards sanded and varnished in the rest of the flat, I never even considered doing that in kitchen and bath.

They both have (under the lino atm), concrete floors so.I.would find it too hard I think to find.boards to match and laminate would look odd next to the 'proper' wood elsewhere I think.

Rubber tiles or sheeting, www.therubberflooringcompany.co.uk. It is lush, as soon as we've recovered from the move I'm getting it in our kitchen and bathroom again.
Had it in our old flat and loved it.

Oooh that rubber flooring looks great, love the air force grey. We only need about three square metres as its a galley kitchen and box of a bathroom so itd be nice and reasonable too.

Does it mark or dent easily?

budhasbelly · 18/08/2012 00:51

Always came up lovely with a quick wipe and, if you're sad like, me a polish with once in a while. I used Klear from Pledge floor polish.

Is is slippy when wet?

No more than any other flooring I'd say. We have painted floorboards in our new house which seem about the same.

So is it sheeting or tiles? The website seems to show it as tiles. If so, can you see the joins?

I'm looking for bathroom flooring and really like the circular dots pattern.

budhasbelly · 18/08/2012 01:10

We had sheet in the bathroom and the tiles with circles in the kitchen. Couldn't see joins. Loved the stuff.

We have vinyl in our kitchen as the boys play in there & I was worried about them falling over & banging their heads (which has happened lots!), however I will be very pleased when they're older & can get tiles as although the vinyl looks ok, it seems to be a dust trap & never really looks clean.

We do have tiles in the bathrooms as the boys don't play in those as such & those floors are lovely Grin

Thanks - I think I'll get some.
